Spring fashion, 1830’s style

Now on display in our Georgian dining room, this dress shows a mixture of two distinct periods in fashion history. The higher waistline recalls the Regency period, while the open neckline and bell-shaped skirt would become popular in the early Victorian period.

Printed cloth became more affordable to the masses during the Georgian period, so this dress would have been groundbreaking in its own way for its original owner.

Pullingers: Farnham’s oldest business

was established in Farnham in 1850, where it operated as a stationers, circulating library and a seller of ‘fancy goods’ (non-essential, often small, decorative items).

The Pullinger family owned the business until 1979 when it was sold to The Farnham Castle Newspaper Group. The business was then sold to the Watson family in 1993 and has remained under their ownership to the present day.

Welcoming some new dapper waistcoats into our collection

Men’s fashion was very different over two hundred years ago. Georgian men dressed to impressed with intricately embroidered waistcoats, much like the two shown here. Embellished with sequins, they would have been rather eye catching when worn with a contrasting coat and breeches.

These late 18th century waistcoats were donated to us by one of our wonderful volunteers, where they have been passed down through his family for the last two hundred years. They will now be conserved, ready for a starring role in the museum’s forthcoming Georgian fashion exhibition in 2027.

Remember, remember the 5th of November 🔥

This description of November 5th festivities draws on the historical reputation of Farnham for its boisterous and sometimes unruly Bonfire Night traditions in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The quote comes from the novel The Old Town (1910) by British author W. Somerset Maugham. It continues:

‘... Bonfires were lit in the main street-two if not more-one at the foot of Castle Street, the other opposite the opening of Bear Lane.

The bottom of Downing Street, drawn in ink by local artist J. G. Garratt (1964).The pavements may now be wider, but this...

The bottom of Downing Street, drawn in ink by local artist J. G. Garratt (1964).

The pavements may now be wider, but this scene remains as recognisable today as it was back in the 1960s.

J. G. Garratt frequently moved around in his early life but came to settle in Farnham with his family in the 1960s. He was an architect, author, and artist, and his work drew much inspiration form the character of the town.

This drawing is part of a series of pen and ink drawings Garratt created for the Farnham Herald, a selection of which are now held at the museum.
