Having studied at Chelsea College of Art and then spending ten years working as a designer, art consultant and art teacher, Alex Ash has combined her skills and expert knowledge to pursue her passion working full time as an artist.

Inspired by the tranquil sea and sun of her childhood home in Dubai and the moody, dramatic seas of North Yorkshire where she was born and now lives, Alex creates abstract seascapes.

Alex works with a range of media, predominantly watercolour, acrylic, resin and 24 carat gold leaf, coating each work with an acrylic pouring, giving a beautiful smooth finish.

Sue Hone started painting in her early 60s and with her first two paintings achieved a childhood ambition of having them accepted for the Ferens (Hull) Open Art Exhibition in 2018 and a further one in 2019.

That gave her the confidence to bare her soul and let others see her work. She has no formal training except for a local six-week art course, where her biggest lesson learnt was to keep going!

Sue paints in the kitchen and eventually on the kitchen, herself and any other surface nearby!

She always uses acrylics on canvas and finds the colours and textures suit her style.

She is obsessed with painting coastal areas and reveling in simplicity, form and glorious colour

Sofia Roe was raised in a cosmopolitan family that exposed her to diverse cultures and a strong appreciation for art.

She studied GCSE and A Level Art at school; and Foundation Art, and BSc and MSc Clothing (Design, Marketing and Management) at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Sofia held a successful commercial career for over 25 years working for some of the largest retail and heritage organisations in the UK, travelled extensively and was privileged to really engage in those local environments.

As she entered midlife, her career motivations shifted. She studied MSc Psychology at University of York and worked as a psychologist for a private consultancy firm.

After signing up to several workshops to reconnect with her creative passions, Sofia has been hooked ever since.

Happy Earth Day everyone

As responsible members of the Filey community, it is our aim to exhibit and supply beautifully designed and well made artwork, but we don't want this to be at the expense of the earth or the people who live on it.

The works for sale in the gallery are luxury items, and there is really no justification for damaging natural environments or exploiting workers in their creation.

All three of our primary supply partners hold FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certifications, meaning that we can offer you the added reassurance and peace of mind about the source of the timber in our products.

Dealing with FSC™ certified suppliers gives you the assurance that our suppliers have robust internal processes and ensures a complete chain of custody throughout the supply chain. Both ourselves and our customers are becoming more focused on sustainability and green credentials, and we are well placed to supply the increasing demand for these products.

As framers, our main inputs are wood sourced material such as moulding, mountboard and rear board, and glass, which is an energy intensive product to manufacture. In recognition of our obligation to preserve the planet for future generations and offset our carbon footprint, not only do we use an 'all green' energy tariff within the gallery, but since the beginning of 2021 we have planted one tree for every length of moulding purchased, through the work of 'Just One Tree', a total of 2759 trees so far.

In addition to using sustainably sourced materials and carbon offsetting, we also offer options such as MDF-free and plastics free framing, removing the use of nylon cord for example, to further reduce the legacy impact of our activities.

This approach to sustainability has seen us win the Scarborough Business Award for Sustainability and has helped us secure framing work for other environmentally minded organisations, including Greenpeace.

Awarded 2024’s national ‘Women In Art’ award for emerging abstract artist and working from her studio in Scarborough, Lindsey Tyson is inspired and driven by a love of nature and the inherent essence of her surroundings. In addition to this, she loves the challenge of combining many and varied textile/art processes and techniques.

Driven by process and experimentation, Lindsey’s work is bold, spontaneous, energetic, and expressive.

Abstract in nature and inspired by her surroundings – whether that be a tumultuous landscape or the ‘mundane’ beauty of a cracked pavement – her work evolves intuitively in response to her muse.

“Although my recent work is abstract in nature, I try to capture a little of the essence of my surroundings – after a lifetime living by the sea in this beautiful part of the country.”

Seagull Gallery are one of only two galleries with permanent displays of Lindsey's work.

All of Lindsey's works are original, one-off pieces.

Laura Watson is an artist based in Whitley Bay in the North East of England. As you can imagine, living by the coast gives her plenty of inspiration for her paintings!

Laura has lived by the sea nearly all of her life, and after a few years spent just creating paintings and drawings for friends and family, she decided to dedicate herself to her artwork alongside her employment. She currently works for the NHS three days a week, and spends the other two days working on her artwork.

At the moment the majority of her work is inspired by the coastline running from Northumberland down through North Yorkshire.

'No two days are the same around here - I don't think I could ever get tired of living by the sea! We're so lucky to live in this part of the country. There are so many beautiful places around here that I often feel like we're spoiled for choice!'

Kate Lycett grew up in Suffolk where the skies are vast and the land is low and flat. Her grandad was an architect and he taught her the rudiments of technical drawing when she was 9. He made a drawing board and a T square, and showed Kate how to sharpen a pencil with a knife.

Kate ventured north to York were she studied fine art at University (YSJ) and specialised in textile design. She had fun with pots of wax, resin, shiny fabrics and butterfly’s wings. From there she spent a year in Huddersfield where she studied industrial applications and CAD; fewer butterflies, more Loom Sheds!

Kate's first design job was in a sterile studio changing colourways of prints to match company logos and she was never allowed to get my hands dirty. She missed her fingers being permanently stained with Prussian blue, and so started to paint again.
In 1999 Kate moved to Sheffield, and after a while started to sell her work in galleries, and in the art and craft markets there. Kate moved to Hebden Bridge, her current home, in 2005.

Kate's textile design background is always present in the way that she paints, and interprets what is around her. She sees patterns in everything; the hills adorned with houses and washing lines, rows of flower pots and stripes of brightly painted drain pipes. Lines of gold thread trace lines through the landscape, and gold leaf changes the surface of her pictures with the changing light of day.

Each limited edition print is hand finished with gold thread and goldleaf.
There are never people in Kate's pictures but they’re full of life and warmth.

We offer 20% discount on framing Kate's work when purchased from the gallery.

James Green is a printmaker, living in Sheffield.

He graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 1995 with a degree in Fine Art having specialized in photography. It took fifteen years before he finally took the plunge and worked full time as a printmaker.

James specialises in linocuts and screen-prints. His subjects range from landscapes to UK wildlife to surreal donkey compositions and larger abstract pieces. He loves how direct and bold print can be, and how its always a challenge to work within its limitations.

In 2006 James was shortlisted for the International Small Print Competition and took part in the Portrait Artist Of The Year (SKY) TV series in 2013. He also took part in Landscape Artist of the Year (SKY Arts) in 2015.

Outside of his personal work he has created commissions for Paul Smith Menswear, The Hepworth Wakefield, Sheffield Children’s Festival, The Folk Forest music festival and Domino Records, among others.

As part of our ongoing support for Filey Art Society, we exhibit the work of one of their members each month.

For April they have chosen the work of Ian Pilbeam.

Ian trained as an illustrator, then worked for many years in London, both as a graphic designer and an art director in design and advertising agencies. Later he moved to the Isle of Man as a commercial photographer. After moving back to the UK in 2020, Ian now lives in Filey.

For his enhanced detail-style watercolour work, Ian uses his own photographs as reference, featuring people in local scenes.

A selection of work by Jane Clarbour

Painting is Jane’s big love. Having recently left full time work in China, many of her works are infused with her rich experiences of living in Asia, but she is increasingly inspired by the beautiful coastline of the gorgeous North Yorkshire coastline.

‘Linescapes’ are Ian Mitchell's unique delineation of the landscape based on a stripped down reality. His series of limited edition landscape prints celebrating the British Coast and Countryside pay homage to the early 20th Century travel posters, and draw on the reductive style of early twentieth century German and Swiss design. Using his original sketches and photographs, Ian refines and reduces the source material down to minimalist forms and shapes, discarding clutter and using artistic license as he goes.

His work to date has been routed in the British Landscape tradition of natural scenery. However, Ian is increasingly drawn to the contemporary man-made landscapes, the concrete modernism of architecture, bridges and the sea defences that symbolise the ‘British Seaside Resort’ and more recently has been working on a series of works celebrating the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Wolds Way.

We are able to supply all of Ian's current ranges, including Yorkshire Coast, Yorkshire Countryside, North East, North West, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, South Downs, Malvern Hills and Dams & Reservoirs.

All of Ian's works are limited editions, 250 available in each image.
