Celebrating and sharing the heritage of Sussex since 1846.

On this day 180 years ago, the Sussex Archaeological Society was founded in Lewes, inspired by a growing interest in the history, archaeology, and stories that shape this remarkable county.

From its earliest days to the present, the Society has worked to protect and uncover Sussex’s past. At Fishbourne Roman Palace, that work continues today through ongoing archaeological research, helping us reveal new insights into life in Romano-Britain and deepen our understanding of our ancestors and their way of life.

As we mark this milestone, we would like to thank everyone who continues to support the discovery, preservation, and sharing of Sussex’s heritage.

Today we celebrate the rich heritage, culture and stories that make Sussex such a special place. At Fishbourne Roman Palace, we’re proud to stand at the heart of Sussex history, preserving the remains of Britain’s largest known Roman residence and sharing its remarkable story with visitors from near and far.

From stunning mosaics and fascinating archaeology to beautiful gardens inspired by the Roman past, Fishbourne offers a unique glimpse into the people who shaped Sussex nearly 2,000 years ago.

Take a quiet moment to enjoy this video of one of our giant poppies swaying in the wind.

Our recreated Roman gardens are in full bloom this June and well worth a visit.

We are part of the 2-for-1 Garden card scheme with Gardener’s World which allows two adults to explore our Palace and Gardens for the price of one, with a valid card.

Our volunteers support us in many different ways. From leading artefact handling sessions, to running guided tours and even helping out on the tills.

This is the wonderful Barbara who has been with us since 2025 and will try her hand at anything she can help with. She even put up our Christmas decorations!
