The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses opened in June 1995 when the automation of Scottish Lighthouses was in its final phase. Housing a nationally recognised collection of Lighthouse artefacts, the Museum tells the story of the Northern Lighthouse Board, its lighthouses, engineers and keepers. The museum also offers tours of Kinnaird Head Lighthouse - a light which escaped automation and preserved in

time as a manned light. Climb to the top of Kinnaird Head Lighthouse to enjoy the views from the top.

ROSE NESS

Today the former Rose Ness light was removed from our former exhibition area where it has been on display since about 2005.

The Minor Light was formerly placed at the entrance of Scapa Flow , an important strategic point in wartime.

The light will now be removed from public display as there are no plans for it to return to the new gallery.

The former lens is also a part of our Collection.

NEW GALLERY

An exciting new chapter has begun at the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses as work has officially started on the new gallery.

Work on the electrics of the new gallery will begin this week before the floor is dug up and a new concrete slab is laid to bear the weight of the fantastic lenses which are to be built in the space - many never before seen by the public!

One of the issues can be seen in the picture: the complete, massive Hoxa Head Minor light will need to move around the gallery in order for the full floor to be laid. Fun and games!

We will keep you posted!

Today is

Alan Stevenson (1807-65) was an accomplished and renowned lighthouse engineer, serving as the Commissioners Chief Engineer 1843-53.

Whilst he had many achievements his career was cut short in 1853 when ill health forced him to retire. He died 12 years later in 1865, his official cause of death being recorded as ‘General paralysis - 8 years’.

In 1865 there was no diagnosis for Multiple Sclerosis, but given his symptoms it is now believed that Alan suffered with that disorder.

There is still no cure for MS and this year the campaign focusses on ‘my diagnosis’, highlighting the global barriers to diagnosing MS and raising awareness by sharing real stories and data.

It’s our favourite day on the Calendar here at the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses so much so that we think it should be a public holiday!

Judging by the size of our lighthouse Breakfast Teacup we think the Light-keepers would agree! We think it must be the Victorian equivalent to a Sports Direct Mug.

Go on. Have a cup! And make it Fair Trade!

ORCA BULL

About 10 minutes ago the patience of the Orca Watch people paid off as an Orca Bull went past Kinnaird Head.

Not the first sighting of Orca this week!
