🗺️ Phase 1B ✅ Invercairn & St Combs Heritage Trail 📣

Today, members of the Invercairn Gala installed the final 4x panels in St Combs, bringing Phase 1B of the project to a close 🙌🏻

The sub-committee would like to extend our sincere thanks to David Buchan Snr, Eunice Stephen, MJ Cardno, Margaret Morrison, Stuart Buchan, and everyone else who contributed local knowledge, assisted, and proofread the content for the St Combs panels. It was a true team effort! ✍️

The project was only made possible due to funding being secured from the North East of Scotland Fisheries Local Action Group (NESFLAG) and the contribution made by Invercairn Gala 💰 🎪 👏🏻

We would also like to thank Foyer Design for designing, printing and fabricating the panels and lecterns - we would highly recommend working with this social enterprise who are based in Aberdeen ☺️

The Heritage Trail sub-committee now turn its attention to Phase 2 where we hope to install another 5x panels on a granite column, purchase a seaside telescope, and landscape another area located next to Cairnbulg Harbour 🔭 🐟

While we are committed to improving the trail and enhancing further points, we hope in the meantime, that you enjoy walking the route(s) and reading the interesting stories/facts at the current ‘Stopping Points’ 😀🚶‍♂️

🗺️ Invercairn & St Combs Heritage Trail 🚶 🚶‍♀️

It was a busy morning for a few members of the Gala committee as 4 out of the 8 interpretation panels were installed throughout the village as part of the Heritage Trail project:

📍 RAF Fraserburgh
📍 Rumbling Gwight
📍 Cotton Shore
📍 Cairnbulg Beach / Philorth

The other 4 panels will be installed at St Combs over the next few weeks when we have more time 🪏(Charlestown/St Combs Railway Station/ St Combs Kirkyard / St Combs Beach) 😃

A huge thank you must go to our hardworking subcommittee! 👏 ✨ They’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes over last year to research, curate, and bring together an incredible collection of stories, facts, and historic photos for our new display panels 📕 🖊️

A special Honourable Mention goes out to David Buchan Snr and Eunice Stephen. Together, they have dedicated hundreds of hours to ensure these panels tell our story in the best way possible. We couldnt have done it without them - thank you both ☺️

There are more people, companies and grant funders which we need to thank for contributing towards the project - This will be done once all panels are installed in a future FB post - watch this space 🙌🏻👏🏻

✨ 1 year on!! ✨

It's approximately 1 year since the first part of the Invercairn & St Combs Heritage Trail project was delivered, with part of the old Cairnbulg Railway station being landscaped! 🚂 🚉

The project has come a long way in a short time, and weve tried our best to preserve the cultural heritage and local history of the site by adding a fresh, modern twist.

Its great to take a step back to compare how the platform looks now compared to 60 years ago….. so weve made a short clip to show the progress made to date and how the site links back to its past 🎥

Weve achieved so much within the last 365 days but we're not finished yet! 💪🏻

What's next?
Work to build a new granite feature wall along the platform is set to start soon! 🔜 This fantastic addition will enhance the historical charm of the site and improve the area even further by creating a clear barrier and additional access point 🛠️🧱

‘Stopping Points’
Keep your eyes peeled for some other project activity happening this weekend as there may be 3 or 4 interpretation panels popping up around the village with St Combs to follow later 🗺️ 📖 😃

📣 Phase 1C - Update 📣

Exciting delivery day at the station! 📦

The new granite memorial plaques for Phase 1C have officially been delivered! Construction on the new feature wall begins the week of September 21st 👷🧱 These plaques will be incorporated into the granite wall build.

The ICSG would like to thank Invercairn Community Council for providing funding to allow for these plaques to be purchased. A sign of two organisations working together to deliver a common goal to improve the community we live in 👏🏻

Question time - does anyone know what the two years, 1903 and 1965 relate to?

🚀 Project Update: A Busy September Ahead!

Exciting news on the sub-committee’s progress as we head into the new season 🍂:

Phase 1B (Interpretation Panels): Drafts for the 8 panels, which are to be located at various ‘Stopping Points' throughout Inverallochy, Cairnbulg & St Combs have been approved and are officially at the printers! Delivery is expected mid-September, and our committee will begin installing them in early autumn 🗺️ 🚶

Phase 1C (Granite Feature Wall): Construction begins this September to help tidy up and restore the old Cairnbulg railway station site by building the granite feature wall along the old platform🪨 The bicycle repair and sheffield stands will also be installed as part of these works 🚲

🚨 📢 A big thank you to Richard and his team at Whytestarlandscapingandpavingltd 📢 👏🏻

They kindly stepped up to supply and repair the broken slab at the Cairnbulg Railway Station project, after finding out about the damage in the original Facebook post. Best of all, they did all this for FREE which is very generous of them 👏🏻😃

Whytestar were the original landscapers who transformed the derelict site into the community space that you see today and we can not recommend them enough for their high standard of work 🪏 🚂

We are incredibly grateful for the quick turnaround and woukd like to highlight that local support like this makes all the difference! 🛠️

😡Damage to the Project ☹️

A great deal of time, effort and resources have gone into making this project ‘Invercairn Heritage Trail’ happen, specifically the landscpaing at the old Cairnbulg Railway Station so it’s disheartening to see bits damaged already. 🚉 🚂

It was discovered this morning that one of the slabs leading up from the pavement was broken, with evidence suggesting that a granite cope was dropped onto it as this was found split in half and left on top of the picnic benches 🤷🏻‍♂️

Whether this was done with intent cant be established……. but considering the weight of the granite cope then its highly doubtful that this was done by the younger generation (children) but by someone older who should know better than move heavy things for no reason!!

Nonetheless the damage has now been done and the ICSG will need to spend ££ and time to replace which is disappointing as the money could be spent on better things 😞

The possibility of vandalism was something the sub-committee considered before starting this project, but we had hoped people would take pride in seeing our villages improved. Unfortunately, that has not been the case as smashed bottles have also been discovered regularly over the past few weeks on site - this takes time to pick up and presents a health hazard. Slabs have been scratched with ‘words’ written on them and litter has been left when there is a bin less than 50 yards away 🗑️

Lets takes pride in our community and respect the spaces we share. There has been many hours spent by volunteers on the project so its discouraging that a repair/fix is required so soon.

The feedback on the transformation of the derelict site into a community green space has been very positive so lets hope this is the last time we need to upload a ‘negative’ FB post highlighting issues experienced.

We are still working on improving the site by delivering Phase 1C (Granite Wall) so will provide further updates when in a position

🌺 🌷 Wh**ky Barrel Train Planter 🚂 🌹

Weve added a splash of colour to the train planter at the old Cairnbulg Railway Station platform, after collecting a mixture of bedding plants from C & A West, Home and Garden Centre. Bikes, Key Cutting 😃

Thanks to Lynsey & gang for spending their time planting over the weekend🪴
