The Gainsborough Heritage Centre is looking forward to welcoming Sir Nicholas Bacon, KCVO, OBE, DL for our talk on Thursday 22 October.

Sir Nicholas Bacon will be sharing the story of his Uncle Hicky, the life of Sir Hickman Bacon, an Edwardian gentleman.

Please note entry to the talk and the bar at the venue are both cash only.

Thomas Miller Our Old Town: A Reimagining - Many of the sports of the children in Our Old Town were strange and quaint, and I often fancied that ‘Dan on the Sack’ might have been played by the Danish and Saxon children, after those stormy sea-kings had, through the far-seeing wisdom of good King Alfred, settled down in our island. I seemed to be looking at the childish sports of a remote age,
when I saw Dan, his mound a doorstep or kerb-stone, and his fosse a gutter, as he struggled to defend himself against all comers, he being conquered if they dragged him down, but conqueror if he pulled up one of his assailants.

🖼️ Our incredible exhibition team update our displays adding new and interesting historical objects, with fascinating stories to share. There is lots to explore and no two visits are ever quite the same!

We have lots of new additions to our 20th century street scene and Post Office displays with new activities for the children, from hopscotch to dressing up outfits and an opportunity to stitch their very own bookmark!

⭐ The Heritage Centre is located in its own historic building, being first built as a Post Office in 1904, opening by 1905 as a Telephone Exchange and Post Office.

🏛️ On your visit, explore the Centre's fantastic displays charting the story of Gainsborough's growth from as far back as the Romans.

⭐ Looking for the perfect Christmas gift then pop in and purchase our new Christmas cards!

🏛️ Our fantastic gift shop stocks beautiful watercolours of local scenes, to drawings of engineering machinery. There is a wide range of books and DVDs available showcasing the Centre's historical research and useful for both local and family history researchers.

We also offer a membership package for only £15 a year. Membership includes free entry to the Heritage Centre's exhibits and displays! If that wasn't enough you can also investigate the Centre's research library, a treasure trove of information to help with any family or local history quest.

📚 Every member receives a quarterly newsletter with fascinating articles and insights into the work of the Heritage Centre.

🕙 The Centre and Exchange Tearoom are open 10am till 4pm, every Tuesday and Saturday.

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of a good friend and colleague Richard 'Pocko' Pocklington. Richard was a volunteer with the Heritage centre for a number of years and also served on the management committee. He was a keen photographer and staunch supporter of Gainsboroughs heritage and especially that of Marshalls. Regularly attending events where he helped his father with their vintage tractors. Always had time for a chat with everyone, a gentleman with a big heart and a good sense of humour. Our thoughts are with Roy, Margaret and the family at this difficult time. Sleep well my friend you will be sorely missed.
