Castlemilk History

Castlemilk History Local History: Contact us at:- [email protected] We wanted to find out more. It was all getting very exciting.

The Local History Group began in October 1989, with a class organised by the WEA (Workers Education Association). At first we learned about the founding of Glasgow and progressed through to the industrial revolution. We soon realised that most of the group became interested in the history of our own area, Castlemilk. Some of us had a basic knowledge, and all of us somehow knew that Mary Queen of S

cots had been here at one time. We made trips to museums, libraries, spoke to older members of the community, read books, gathered photographs and found more and more people and places to contact. Then came the suggestion to put on a History Exhibition in conjunction with other history groups in the area who were researching their own specific subjects. The Castlemilk People's History Group, the WEA reminisence class meeting in the Pensioners Action Centre, made a tape ol old childhood songs and wrote a book, "The Big Flit", of their early memories of Castlemilk as a post-war housing scheme. The Jeely Piece Club made stained glass Windows, Ceramic tiles depicting historical scenes and reconstructed the inside of an old cottage. They also looked into how children lived, worked and played in the olden days. Our group studied the local area from neolithic times, discovering the archaeology of the place, to the Castlemilk house and the Stirling Stuarts with their connection with Mary Queen of Scots. The exhibition took place for a week in October 1990 and was a great success. Can I just add that I do not wish this site to become a chat forum, it is ok to ask questions and get responses but preferably to be kept to "Castlemilk History", or any particular photo... If there are non Castlemilk Posts, they may be deleted within a few days... Also I don't want any advertising of other sites unless it's related to Castlemilk and it's people... Just hope you understand and are ok with this! Thank you... PS, Can I please ask folks to mind their language as a lot of School kids might well be using this page to help learn a bit about their area... Thanks! :)

In the UK, the Census was taken every ten years since 1801, with the exceptions of 1941 (WW2). Interestingly, the censuses were initially conducted partly to ascertain the number of men able to fight in the Napoleonic Wars, and partly over population concerns... an industrious population is the basic power and resource of any nation, and therefore its size needs to be known'
'the number of men who were required for conscription to the militia in different areas should reflect the area's population'
'there were defence reasons for wanting to know the number of seamen'
'the need to plan the production of corn and thus to know the number of people who had to be fed'
'a census would indicate the Government's intention to promote the public good' and
'the life insurance industry would be stimulated by the results.' 1841 Census was the first to intentionally record names of all individuals in a household or institution.
