Glasgow Art Club is a Scottish registered charity, no.SC039231. In 1893 two adjacent town houses on Bath Street were transformed by architects Honeyman & Keppie, employing Charles Rennie Mackintosh, into the magnificent Clubhouse which stands today. Over the years the Club has evolved from a world solely occupied by the Arts into a diverse hang out for artists and non-artists alike - a melting pot of people of all ages, from all backgrounds, working in all professions. Fully licensed, with food served daily in the dining room, there is also a bustling diary of events with everything from live music and Burns Suppers to artist demonstrations and life classes. There is something for everyone at the Glasgow Art Club. The Glasgow Art Club is a Scottish registered charity, no.SC039231.

The Glasgow Art Club in 1913 compared to today! It’s incredible to see how many features of the Club remain identical, 113 years later.

2 weeks until our new exhibition, ‘The Flower and The Stone’ by Scott Kilgour (Scott Kilgour Art ) is up in our Gallery! It’s a culmination and celebration of two formative moments in Scottish culture: the world of the Pictish cross-slab stones and the Glasgow style of the Victorian era.

Our featured artist this month is member and resident artist Lesley Banks!!

Lesley will be exhibiting at the Club on 20th November with a body of work ‘examining the nocturnal landscape, specifically focusing on the quiet transformation that occurs after dark’.

‘Through the depiction of street lamps, glowing windows and moonlight, the work explores how luminosity pierces the darkness and redefines the coastal landscape where land meets the sea’.

‘I am drawn to the warm light and quiet activity at night, when the contrast between inside and outside becomes more pronounced’.

We are very excited to see the beautiful work that Lesley has been creating upstairs in her studio in November 🤩

With the Westbourne concerts starting up tomorrow, it seems fitting to reflect on how music has always been a constant in the life of the art club 🎶🎤

1) On Thursday, 6th October 1927 there was a Ladies Afternoon at the club with music by members of the company - this is an invitation to the concert!

2) Among this page of visitor signatures in September of 1925 is Malcolm Sargent of the British National Opera Company.

The British National Opera Company presented opera in English in London and on tour throughout Britain between 1922 and 1929. Aylmer Buesst, whose signature also features, was among the musicians who met at the inaugural meeting of the new enterprise.

Sargent was also closely associated with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and there are signatures in the club visitor books from their many visits.

He was a dominant figure at the Proms in the post-war era and was chief conductor from 1947 until his death in 1967.

He gained his widest fame making the “Last Night of the Proms” a high-ratings broadcast celebration.
Sargent received a Knighthood in the 1947 Birthday Honours for services to music.
