Six wonderfully atmospheric paintings were delivered yesterday by Glasgow based artist Neil Macdonald. His attraction to and love of that older sense of Scotland, of times perhaps lost, instil a romantic melancholy to his work which I love.
His work will be on display until November 15th

"I am drawn to locations which exert historic and mythic presence. I am particularly engaged with Scottish history and the evidence of its previous peoples.
I explore the lyrical narrative of natural sites and strong bold shapes offered by castles, churches, old townships and harbours. I do this through distortion of perspective, invention and editing, aiming to capture an essence of the structure or place."

Opening next Friday (10th October) is The Power of Still Life. A fabulous exhibition from our wonderful gallery artists.

The ancient academies of art formalised the classic genres of painting, of which Still Life for centuries was perhaps the Cinderella of its time. But the artists of the 20th century upset all of that and Still Life, in the hands of painters such as Picasso and Braque, Ben Nicholson and the Two Roberts, transcended all of the old rules.
It is the kind of painting that was seen as closest to its audience which recognised the everyday and personal elements of its compositions. It remains the kind of painting which communicates most clearly with the public, whether serious collectors or just somebody who falls in love with a particular collections of inanimate objects in a painting – jugs, books, ceramics, flowers, the bric-a-brac of everyday life.

Also new to the gallery this week comes six vibrant still life paintings from Andrew Cross.

It is important to the artist that he keeps the application of paint as fresh looking as possible, with brush marks and scrapings still evident in the finished work.

Both shows are open to the public from today.

From next week you can view a small but beautiful exhibition of eight paintings from Sarah Carrington of her beloved Isle of Iona.

“Iona is steeped in history, has an incredible light quality, and a wonderful sense of space. Known as a “thin place” – where the gap between heaven and earth is at its thinnest – people have been drawn to this little isle for centuries. Iona’s varied, beautiful landscape and all its tones and textures are a continual inspiration for me as a painter.”

With our second august virtual exhibition we cast a spotlight upon and showcase new work from Michael Corsar (yes me).
Twilight is my favourite time of the day. As the daylight begins to fade it’s a time to pause – to reflect – to breathe.
I hope you enjoy.

As our summer exhibition continues until September, to keep the website fresh I have curated two virtual exhibitions for August.

First, Birds is, as its title suggests, all about birds. It brings together both painting and sculpture to celebrate all things avian. Birds have long been a source of fascination for artists, for their beauty or their symbolic promise. The freedom of flight is an enticing subject for those seeking freedom of thought and expression.

John Houston, OBE, RSA was born in Buckhaven, Fife, and is best known for his landscapes inspired by the East Coast of Scotland, especially the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth. But this is a rare venture west.
His work goes beyond the simple representation of the countryside his use of colour is unique with bold, warm and vibrant hues which mixed together form unforgettable work.
