GoMA - Glasgow Museums

GoMA - Glasgow Museums GoMA is the most visited modern art gallery in Scotland. Entry is free. It plays an important part in the city’s rich heritage which continues today.
(1991)

GoMA is housed in an iconic building located in the heart of Glasgow, which it shares with the city centre library. For over 100 years the building was a centre for business and commercial exchange where information and goods were traded. GoMA continues that philosophy of exchange by being a centre for people to gather, discuss and learn, inspired by the art it collects and shows. GoMA believes in

working with every community of the city and has gained international recognition for its social engagement programming.

Calling all mothers and caregivers! 📣 Join us for creative, art-based workshop inviting mothers and caregivers to step into the frame: to reflect, express and reimagine how museums can better see and support them.

📅 Friday, 22nd May, 11am-1pm

We'll create a collaborative poem from words found in the museum and design self-portraits of your "Everyday me" and "Museum me". Then, together, we'll build a mini "Ideal Museum" model to share our vision for change.

No artistic skills required! Just your voice, your story and your imagination!

This workshop is for mothers and caregivers. Children are welcome to attend with their caregiver, there will be a children's corner and they can join any part of the workshop.
FREE but please book a spot on Eventbrite here:

GoMA are delighted to announce the recent acquisition of - ‘Dirty Dancing Flowers (Orange Vibrate)’, 2024 and ‘IN THE STUDIO’, 2022 by Leanne Ross (1984-2025) for Glasgow Life Museums’ collection.

'Dirty Dancing Flowers (Orange Vibrate)’ (2024) was first presented in Leanne Ross’ ambitious exhibition 'Dirty Dancing Flowers' at Tramway, Glasgow (November 2024 – March 2025), where the GoMA curatorial team first encountered this work. It was an immediate and compelling choice for the collection, and we are deeply grateful to Leanne’s family for making this work available. We then faced a difficult decision: choosing one ‘Shout Out’ work to represent her practice more broadly within the collection. We selected ‘IN THE STUDIO’ as it resonated strongly with the museum as a perfect statement of intent, energy and joy, one we look forward to including in collection displays in the near future.

Leanne Ross was a founding member of - an artist collective studio based in Midlothian that brings together a diverse group of artists, with and without learning disabilities. Our Producer|Curator Katie Bruce had a fantastic visit to the studio back in January and it was a privilege to see the studio where Leanne worked and meet her fellow KMAdotcom artists.

A huge thank you to Kendall Koppe at Kendall for working with us to realise the acquisition.

A striking illuminated sculpture by Nathan Coley is now gracing Glasgow’s skyline. WE ARE THE MONUMENT, a specially commissioned work created by the celebrated Glasgow-based artist, has been acquired by Glasgow Life Museums for the city’s museum collection, and has been installed for its first year of public display on the roof of Glasgow’s Dental Hospital and School in Sauchiehall Street.

It is one of three Coley artworks which have been brought into the city's collection by Glasgow Life Museums with support from Art Fund the national charity for museums and galleries, and the National Fund for Acquisitions.

Today, along with the Estate of Aubrey Williams, October Gallery and collections across the UK, we celebrate the remarkable art, vision and legacy of Aubrey Williams.

You can find out more today at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre in a specialist tour at 2.30pm. Please phone 0141 276 9300 to check for available places.

We hold two of his incredible paintings from the 1960's - 'Rockface' and 'Maridowa Series IV’ through a project with curatorial duo - Mother Tongue who were awarded an Art Fund New Collecting Award in 2018 in affiliation with Glasgow Museums. These awards offer 100% funding for focused collecting projects, enabling curators to expand collections into exciting new areas or deepen existing holdings in significant new ways. Works by Williams were acquired in 2019 and displayed in the show 'Revisiting the Work of Black Artists in Scotland Through New Collecting' in 2022.

Born in Guyana in 1926, Williams developed a powerful visual language that moved between abstraction and figuration, grounded in a profound awareness of humanity’s relationship to the environment, history and the cosmos.

After arriving in London in 1952, he became a founding member of the Caribbean Artists Movement — a pivotal network of artists and intellectuals who reshaped the city’s cultural landscape. For more information on the artist please visit the October gallery website https://www.octobergallery.co.uk/artists/williams

We have a new blog! To celebrate our 30th anniversary, we have been working on a refreshed look for our blog, where you'll be able to find the team's thoughts on our collections and shows, behind the scenes content, and special guests' posts. 🎂🤩

Here's a sneak peek:
"GoMA has turned 30 – in human terms it’s not even entered middle-age – and during those 30 years it’s certainly crammed a whole lot in! At a moment of much precarity for art, culture and heritage in the city we reflect on how fortunate we are as an institution to exist and welcome all through our fabulous golden doors."
Gareth James, museum manager
