This tour by GoMA Curator Katie Bruce will look at two key paintings in Glasgow Life Museums' collection by the Guyanese painter Aubrey Williams as part of his centenary year celebrations.

We hold two of his incredible paintings from the 1960's - 'Rockface' and 'Maridowa Series IV’ - through a project with curatorial duo Mother Tongue who were awarded an Art Fund New Collecting Award in 2018 in affiliation with Glasgow Museums. These awards offer 100% funding for focused collecting projects, enabling curators to expand collections into exciting new areas or deepen existing holdings in significant new ways. Works by Williams were acquired in 2019 and displayed in the show 'Revisiting the Work of Black Artists in Scotland Through New Collecting' in 2022.

Born on 8 May 1926 he lived in Guyana until 1952 when he left to enrol at St Martins School of Art, London, UK. Williams’ work is now considered important in the development of 20th century abstraction painting. His concerns about past histories being repeated in the contemporary ensure his paintings are vibrant in colour, paint and texture on the surface of the canvas with the meaning of these layers merging geological, historical and human ideas. He felt that painting could communicate just as much as the written word and argued strongly that abstraction was ‘no less socially committed as figurative painting’.

Join Dr Yupin Chung, Curator of East Asian Art, for a special tour looking at exquisite items from the 1878 Japanese Government Gift, including our fabulous collection of silk.
📅 Tuesday 5th May, 2.30-3.30pm

The Vienna World’s Fair of 1873 introduced Europeans to a new pure silk fabric. A year earlier, in 1872, the Meiji government established the Tomioka Silk Mill, one of Japan’s first modern silk reeling factories. The Tomioka silk it produced impressed audiences at the World Fair, and the name “Tomioka silk” quickly spread throughout Europe. A Japanese gift to Glasgow included a sample of the raw silk from the new factory.
Today, the Tomioka Silk Mill is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Textile industry was one of the first to be mechanised in Japan, with changes staggered during the Meiji era (1868-1912), deliberately modifying the production of different silk fibres. At the time, Nishijin-ori artisans responded rapidly. In 1872, the Kyoto Prefecture government sent three weavers to Lyon, France, to acquire pioneering techniques and knowledge. Upon their return, they introduced the Jacquard loom to Japan for the first time. Woven textiles produced in the Nishijin area of Kyoto are known as Nishijin-ori. They feature brilliantly dyed silk interwoven with lavish gold and silver threads into complex patterns.
