Below is a transcript of Sam's narration,
I insist upon the importance, especially in today’s world of art and artists enthused with camaraderie, enthusiasm, empathy, joy, intuition and a generosity of spirit; all qualities which are needed now more than ever.
I believe art illuminates and inspires, magnifies and dramatises our lives in the same way writing can leave you breathless. Art is “like burning all your clothes off and leaving you standing there singed and ridiculous in the glare of the lightning”. (Anne Carson)
I believe supposedly impossible things are continually being achieved by people who come together in collaborative endeavour.
I know art is like life itself, full of confusion, tenderness, beauty, sorrow, struggle, anger and joy.
I believe that the personal is political and that in art the personal, political, and social, the emotional and the intellectual are welded into a coherent whole.
I know that my fellow artists and professional colleagues around the globe form a network of friends and allies; they are a powerful community advocating for change and the importance of Art.
Resistance and Change often begin in Art (Ursula Le Guin). Art enriches lives by asking a lot of questions; what does our future world look like? What do we think? Who do we want to be?
Joy is such a human madness and can multiply itself dangerously (Zadie Smith). It may seem inappropriate in today’s world but we have to fight to retain it.
What veteran artists know about each other is that they have engaged with the ideas and issues that really matter to them; they produce fully realised works that become real because they include all that they know about themselves.
As a woman artist, I have been aware of being “Outside the Circle” but that has made me stronger and more committed to the life of an artist. Being on the periphery is sometimes no bad thing. It forges you into steel.
