🎨 Scottish artist James Paterson (1854–1932) was a keen traveller, often seeking out warmer climes.

He first visited Tenerife in 1901 and was particularly impressed by the scale and sound of the ‘mountains of water’ crashing onto the shores of Puerto Orotava.

The watercolours he produced there were executed with exuberant wet washes and dabs of paint, revealing a new freedom of expression that suited the medium well.

In this example, the colours are softly blended, and the pale buildings recede into the distance against the darker foreground, conjuring a misty, overcast day.

Our new exhibition ‘Naeem Mohaiemen: THROUGH A MIRROR, DARKLY’ opens this Friday (5 June) at the Hunterian Art Gallery.

‘THROUGH A MIRROR, DARKLY’ (2025), a new three-channel film by Mohaiemen, explores memorialisation through milestone moments in May 1970 when American students protesting domestic racism and overseas wars were met with state violence.

By bringing together archival footage and contemporary ceremonies of memorialisation, the film explores the role of memorials as a focal point for individual and collective grief.

Commissioned and produced by ARTANGEL.

Commissioned in partnership with Film and Video Umbrella and Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University.

There's just a few spaces left to join us this weekend for '2601: Future Museum' 📣

Go behind the scenes in The collections to explore objects up close, as we imagine what museums might look like hundreds of years from now.

As the University of Glasgow celebrates its 575th anniversary, we're looking another 575 years ahead to ask: what might life be like in the year 2601? Which objects might survive? How will climate change shape the way we store objects, and what we store?

This session is part of Glasgow Science Festival, and is open to families and children aged 10+.

Happy ! 🦖

This tiny dinosaur footprint from The collection is one of the smallest in the world. Although no longer officially the world's smallest, it was recognised by the book of Guinness World Records in 2006.

The footprint is from the Middle Jurassic Period (170 million years old) and the dinosaur that made it was no bigger than a wren.

Our Curator of Palaeontology discovered it by chance while examining a larger footprint on the surface of the same rock. The smaller one was found between its toes.

You can see it on display in the Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow.

in 1836, French painter and lithographer Jules Chéret (1836–1932) was born.

Chéret is widely regarded as the pioneering figure in the history of the artistic poster, introducing colour lithography to Paris in the 1860s. His prolific designs are distinguished by their vivacity, colour and movement.

This poster is an advert for Get Frères Pippermint Crème de menthe and depicts an elegantly dressed woman, gracefully pouring out a glass of liqueur.

Our new exhibition ‘Naeem Mohaiemen: THROUGH A MIRROR, DARKLY,’ opens next Friday at the Hunterian Art Gallery.

Step back to May 1970, a pivotal moment of student protest, grief, and reflection. Mohaiemen’s new three-channel film, ‘THROUGH A MIRROR, DARKLY’ (2025), revisits the tragic events at Kent State, Ohio, and Jackson State, Mississippi, where students standing up against domestic racism and the Vietnam War were met with state violence.

By bringing together archival footage and contemporary ceremonies of memorialisation, the film explores the role of memorials as a focal point for individual and collective grief.

✨ A new rotation of works on paper is now on display at the Art Gallery!

Because of their sensitivity to light, these pieces can only be shown for short periods. Every few months we refresh the selection, offering new opportunities to encounter rarely seen works.

This rotation brings together drawings, prints, watercolours and pastels by Scottish artists, selected to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Royal Scottish Academy and their contribution to the development of Scottish art.

Look out for works by Mary Armour, Duncan Shanks, James Paterson, George Henry, William Crosbie and Robert Colquhoun.

You’ll find them throughout the Hunterian Art Gallery main gallery, creating new connections with our permanent displays.

📍 Hunterian Art Gallery.
🕰️ Tuesday–Sunday, 10.00am–5.00pm.
