🎨 Scottish artist James Paterson (1854–1932) was a keen traveller, often seeking out warmer climes.
He first visited Tenerife in 1901 and was particularly impressed by the scale and sound of the ‘mountains of water’ crashing onto the shores of Puerto Orotava.
The watercolours he produced there were executed with exuberant wet washes and dabs of paint, revealing a new freedom of expression that suited the medium well.
In this example, the colours are softly blended, and the pale buildings recede into the distance against the darker foreground, conjuring a misty, overcast day.
