in 1918 a great disaster was developing. The Austrian army at the Battle of Piave in Italy had opened up a gaping hole in the British central lines. Ably supported by the Worcestershire Regiment the 6th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment plugged the hole.

In an outstanding reversal these comrades in arms snatched a great victory from the jaws of defeat. Not only was the gap plugged but the Austrians pushed back.

🎺Help Bring Gloucestershire's Wartime Story to Life for Children🎺

Over the past year, we have introduced a range of new children's activities throughout the museum. From discovery trails and hands-on exhibits to quiet reading spaces, these additions have helped young visitors engage with history in new and exciting ways.

We now want to take the next step by expanding the children's offer within our WWII gallery. With your support, we hope to create new interactive activities, sensory experiences, replica ration packs and Gloucester Blitz resources that will help children learn through exploration and discovery.

Every donation, no matter how small, will help us inspire the next generation and ensure Gloucestershire's wartime stories continue to be shared for years to come.

OBJECT OF THE WEEK

Not every military artefact was made on the battlefield.

This unusual cigar lighter was created from the lid of a presentation cup awarded to the Gloucestershire Yeomanry. Rather than being discarded, the silver lid was carefully repurposed into a practical personal item, giving it a second life and preserving a tangible connection to the regiment's history.

Objects like this tell us something that medals and weapons often cannot. They reveal the personal side of military service – the souvenirs, keepsakes and everyday items that accompanied soldiers long after the fighting was over.

The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars have a proud history stretching from the Napoleonic era through the Boer War and both World Wars, and this small object offers a fascinating glimpse into that long regimental story.

Want to help preserve it for future generations?

You can adopt this object and support the care of our collection:

in 1758 the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot would help besiege Louisbourg. This town in modern day Canada was the gateway to French colonial holdings in North America and would be a huge victory in the Seven Years War.
