“There are places that feel less like somewhere new, and more like a return to yourself.”

In this reflection on moving to the Cairngorms, artist .emburey describes how the forests and mountains of Speyside echoed the landscapes of her childhood in Slovakia.

Created shortly after relocating to the Highlands in 2017, Haze emerged during the chaos of house renovations, painted in a small temporary space, with Chinese ink on delicate Japanese Kozo paper. These abstracted pine forms quietly capture a sense of belonging, memory, and reconnection with landscape.

JANA IS INSPIRED BY TOWN’S WOODS

Art lovers in Badenoch and Strathspey have the chance to experience the work of an artist who regularly exhibits in London’s Mayfair.

Treading Softly — inspired by woodland, decay, memory, and the interconnected systems of nature — is now showing at OPENSPACE Gallery on Grantown-on-Spey High Street until 23 May.

“I am inspired by the woodland, walking daily, on the ground covered by the fallen foliage, breaking down, feeding the ecosystem, the air fragrant, our footsteps softened.”

Emburey’s drawing and making is often labour-intensive, focused, and slow — a meditative process built from thousands of intricate hand-drawn marks.

She has exhibited widely across the UK and internationally, with work held in both private and public collections. Jana Emburey is currently represented by IONE & MANN.

Tread softly on our earth, or so we ought to do. This great, breathing entity we inhabit and are part
of, which sustains us—our life support.

There are surely other suitable worlds in the vast universe we can find soon enough and settle on. Or
at least that’s how we collectively behave.

Taking a closer look at what is so rare but prevalent at least in this part of Scotland, the artist was
inspired by the woodland, walking daily, on the ground covered by the fallen foliage, breaking down,
feeding the ecosystem, the air fragrant, our footsteps softened.

“Hold a petal, a leaf, a blade of grass, a bug, some lichen or a pine needle in your hand. Spend time
with your chosen miraculous thing. Feel the textures, observe the colours and shape, note the scent.
Take a photograph. Or even better, draw it. It doesn’t matter how well. The invisible will become
visible, our sense of wonder and gratitude will grow.

This woodland, quietly breathing and whispering under the night’s sky.”

30 MAR -25 APR 2026

SPORE IS A COLLABORATIVE INSTALLATION BY ARTISTS STEVE HADEN AND HAZEL MCLEOD. THE INSTALLATION TOUCHES ON THE SUBTLE INTERCONNECTIONS OF NATURE, DECAY, REGROWTH AND REBIRTH.

Emulating the symbiotic relationship between trees and mycelium (fungus underground network between trees) and two artists working from different disciplines.

Spore explores the juxtaposition of old industry being left to rot with the reclamation of its elements back to the ground by microorganisms, spores, seeds, fungus, moulds, rust.

Both artists make and sell traditional art and crafts however for this installation the materials have been created to be non functional, intentionally used out of context but to remind the viewer how much we need each other to grow.
