As the sailing season begins (keep an eye out for some approaching sailing trips with open spaces remaining, posting tomorrow), our crew are busily going through training to shake off the winter cobwebs! Last Saturday was a fine day for it, a fresh breeze and bright sunshine, and skipper Neil had three newly qualified mates -- Ela, Alex and Don (that's me, folks) -- who needed to do their skipper overboard training. And no, in case you wondered, we didn't chuck Neil overboard, we use a training dummy!

Thank you to Alex and Allie for additional photos.

Another update from the wherry base from Mike Sparkes!

After a busy winter work programme getting Albion, and the wherry base, ready for the new 2026 sailing and chartering season, the Norfolk Wherry Trust would like to say a huge thank you to all their volunteers. Week after week those volunteers have given their time freely and especially their wonderful skills throughout the autumn and especially the very cold winter period. This weekend Albion goes out on her first sail of the season for crew training. This Sunday May 3rd 2026 the wherry base at Ludham will be open to the public. So please come down and see Albion and have a talk with some of our volunteers. Our base is located at the following address. Forsythe Wherry Yard, Ludham, Norfolk, NR29 2QG

Albion is ready for the sailing season! Here is an update from the wherry base from Mike Sparkes

"Today we rigged Albion for the 2026 sailing season. We put on Albion's old sail which was made in 1999, this old sail made by Jeckells of Wroxham is now 26 years old but still performing well. The Black Clipper Canvas material is really special as it holds its shape as can be seen in my photograph taken today at the wherry base. I would like to thank my rigging team Tim, Dave, Neil, Paul and Kevin for their help, thankfully the weather was perfect with a light N.E wind and plenty of lovely sunshine. The only difference for me personally, was 26 years ago the first time I rigged the 1999 sail, getting on and off Albion's hatches was easy. Sadly, today my joints were telling me I was 26 years older and it showed."

Well done Mike and team!
