Who remembers the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988? If you visited you may well have seen some intriguing oversized eyewear; George Wyllie’s Rose Tinted Spectacles.

It is an artwork that artist Campbell Mackintosh helped to make with George Wyllie. Visit our Upstairs Basement to see a new exhibition ‘Statistical Destiny’ by Campbell Mackintosh, open now until 13th June.

*One week left to see current exhibition*

“Cultivator” by Gareth Fisher PRSA, 1995.

is the current President of the . He tends to work in plaster but also makes constructions with wood and stone as well as sometimes casting in bronze. The act of construction is significant in Fisher’s practice, and the combination of solid form and construction comes together increasingly in his more recent watercolour studies. In both his early and more recent work, Fisher combines realism with abstract motifs.

The bronze figurative element in this work on display at the Wyllieum also appears in another form in his work which is on display as part of the RSA annual exhibition which opened recently.

Born in Cumbria in 1951, Fisher attended Edinburgh College of Art from 1969 to 1976 gaining a Diploma in Sculpture before continuing with postgraduate study. During the late 1970s and 80s Fisher worked from a studio in Edinburgh and became Chairperson of the New 57 Gallery. In the 90s Fisher began working as a lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, becoming Professor of Sculpture in 2006.

Gareth Fisher was elected the President of the Royal Scottish Academy in 2022.

Remembering George Wyllie today as it’s the anniversary of his passing, age 90, in 2012.
The Wyllieum was created to celebrate his work, life and legacy and we hope he would have been proud.

*Exhibition from 22nd May-13th June*

Opening event 23rd May 2-5pm.

A new exhibition ‘Statistical Destiny’ by artist Campbell Macintosh is opening soon in our upstairs basement.

A signmaker by trade, 20 years ago Campbell rekindled his early love of art. His work is mostly figurative and intuitive abstract and has been exhibited in West Kilbride and The Beacon Greenock summer exhibition. In his early years in sign-making he was involved in George Wyllie’s artwork ‘see the world through rose tinted spectacles, ’supplying the pink perspex lenses.
