There’s only a few spaces left at the next Guildhall Coffee Time Talk which takes place next Thursday.

Julian Morgan will tell us about Guildford and the Postcard Craze. The early years of the 20th century were the golden age of the picture postcard. Around 900 million cards were posted in 1913. Guildford traders keenly joined in with the craze. The talk looks into some of the local personalities involved, illustrated with the cards they produced.

Prebooking required: email [email protected] or phone 01483 444751.

This month marks 65 years since the Consecration of Guildford Cathedral and its building completion.

Many will know how the building of the Cathedral had to be halted during the Second World War, and only resumed again in the 1950s. Due to funding and material shortages from the war, the ‘brick-by-brick' campaign was launched so that Guildford residents could contribute to the completion of the building, showing real community spirit and the feeling that this Cathedral was truly theirs.

This certificate of thanks is in our collection. It was given to a resident, on the 40th anniversary of the Consecration, from the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral sharing thanks for contributing a brick.

The Cathedral was consecrated on 17 May 1961 by Bishop George Reindorp in the presence of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
