🕊FLOCK: 08.08 – 20.09🕊

A Multi-Generational Exhibition of Art That Celebrates The Power of Community & Collaboration

“The sense of community is the most essential element in building a better world.”

For our upcoming exhibition ‘Flock’, we invite submissions of artwork that explores the spirit of togetherness, of community and collaboration. The artist’s response to this can either be through the way that the work is created or made, or as the central theme, response or concept behind the piece of work. It could also be made by a collective, group or partnership e.g. a group of artists, by a parent artist and child, with groups of friends, siblings, community groups and so on. Alternatively the artwork could be created over time during the exhibition, by inviting visitors to come into the gallery and contribute towards the making of the artwork… All interpretations of this theme are welcome.

This exhibition asks – In a world full of chaos and unease, can we as individuals find solace in coming together as one, and use collaboration and community as a force for good?

For this exhibition we encourage artists of all ages (from the age of 4 and above), from all backgrounds and corners of the Sussex community and beyond to create, make and develop their art practice. We are especially interested in seeing artworks made by groups of individuals in a spirit of collaboration – be it within family groups, friendships groups, school classes, charitable organisations, work-place groups (as a small example). Collaboration is a the core theme.

We will be accepting all mediums and artworks can be made across the following 2d and 3d disciplines – painting (oils, acrylics, water-based mediums), drawing and mixed media, print-making and photography, textiles, ceramics, installation, metalwork and woodwork.

All artworks will need to be submitted as part of the Gallery’s selection process which is free to enter. 2D works must be ‘ready to hang’ and framed to a good standard (no clip frames) where necessary. Schools and/or children under the age of 18 are excluded from this. If work is made on paper, it will need to be mounted on card or board for extra durability for when the work is displayed.

3D works will be accepted and Gallery North can hang 3D work on the walls, from the ceilings, or for floor-based work – on plinths if needed. If you are submitting a sculpture, installation or alternate art form, please provide details on how your work can or should be displayed as this will help during the selection process.

To submit your work please email Emma at [email protected] or apply using the Google Form link here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdCi-iRtO1uS5nzVtwUrhw66afhKQp1hy03gpj-2MYE0L0Adg/viewform

If the artist is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must complete the form on their behalf. The minimum age for entries is 4 years old.

Beyond Borders: 16.05 - 04.07

A trio of artworks here from artists who focus on materiality - pairing found objects with traditional mediums to create meaning and altered perceptions.

🔴1st image - Mass Grave Digger by Ailbhe Callanan whose work focuses on colonised land, and the incessant and inescapable borders. "I am fascinated by the impact that these lines can have on our identities - filling us with pride, longing, repulsion, or indifference. With a new dedication to materiality, I have repositioned the focus of my practice towards the formal element of composition - an element I have previously underutilised or shied away from. The materials themselves led each piece beyond its frame, allowing them to occupy space as objects which, in most cases, occurs outside of the typical rectangular shape. "

⭐2nd image - By Julie Ford "Coastal Diary was made in response to the many people who get into small boats in hopes of finding a life worth living away from their country of origin. In this work a length of fragile, connected, painted, and sewn envelopes, wind and fall, with orange pigment and a recurring lifejacket motif signifying the desperately dangerous crossings. "

🔵3rd image - "New Baroque" by Rebecca Wells "I work in dialogue between the traditional medium of oil painting and assemblage. I use unconventional found or waste materials in a form of extended painting which goes 'beyond the borders' of painting.

Hedgerows II by Kate McMinnies sitting beautifully in our bay window and soaking up the light.

Created using stoneware clay, sussex oak branch, and dried hazel - W75cm H45cm D45cm
£595

Of her work, Kate says "This piece is a call to celebrate our hedgerows - one of our most valuable natural assets. Weaving through our countryside, these living networks connect habitats support biodiversity and provide food, shelter and safety for birds, mammals and insects.

Beyond their ecological richness, hedgerows play a vital role in combating climate change- capturing and storing carbon, reducing flooding , and preventing soil erosion through their deep root systems.

For farmers, they offer shade and shelter for livestock and act as windbreaks that protect crops, creating more resilient and sustainable land management.

Culturally, hedgerows are part of our shared history — boundaries shaped by generations, marking communities’ ties to the land.

Yet many hedgerows are neglected, removed, or left to decline. In the past 80 years we have lost over 50 % of our hedgerows.

Caring for them means investing in wildlife, climate stability, and rural identity. Restoring and maintaining them is not just conservation; it’s an act of stewardship that connects past, present, and future.

A beautiful and poignant statement piece in Vanishing Place - our current springtime exhibition. On display until 9th May.
