We can now announce our next steaming days for the rest of the summer. We start warming up the boiler and engines first thing in the morning so that our lovely old engines are ready to run around 12 noon. They will run all afternoon until about 3pm with a short half hour break for lunch at 1.30pm.

The dates over the summer are June 13th & 27th, July 11th & 25th, August 8th & 22nd and September 5th & 19th. We will announce dates for the winter towards the end of the summer.

Please always check our website or social media as unforeseen circumstances may change our schedule.

Come and talk to our volunteers to learn about the engines and how they impacted the development of power during the Industrial Revolution in 19th Century Calderdale.

Our last Wednesday Talk before the summer will break will be next Wednesday, 10th June, when two of our well known volunteers, Keith Ramsden & Janine Godfrey, will be giving a two hander on the subject of Moquette. Some of you might remember Keith's excellent [and entertaining] talk on the production of moquette at John Holdsworth's of Shaw Lodge Mills from a couple of years ago. This talk promises to be just as informative and entertaining: an introduction to all things moquette and the subsequent designs and fashions. I've been reliably informed that there's still a big future for Moquette: so come along and find out!

All our talks are open to members of the public as well as members of the museum. Entry is at the yard door [not the door on Square Rd] and doors will open at 7pm. The talk will start at 7.30pm. The price for non members is still £5 on the door. Tea, coffee & biscuits will be available from 7pm for a donation of £1.

Anne is already planning the talks programme for the autumn with another night with Philip Hellawell lined up. He is always entertaining and informative. Check back to find out what else we have planned.

We will be steaming again today. The boiler is on and should be ready for running at 12 with a break for lunch at 1.30.

We’ve got new signs for our steaming days. They will be out today and we will be running two stationary steam engines from 12noon until about 3pm. The team will be having a break at 1.30pm for half an hour.

14/05/2026

Just a reminder that we are running our two stationary steam engines this weekend. The horizontal and the beam engines will be running from about 12 noon to 3pm. The steam team will be around to talk to you about the engines but they will be taking their lunch break from 1.30pm to 2pm.

The museum is open from 10am until 4pm with last entry at 3pm. Access to the steam engines is included in the usual entrance fee.

Can anyone help to save this valuable local asset.

Can anyone help to save this valuable local asset.

The Folklore Centre is about to run out of cash! So I’m organising a MASSIVE second hand book sale, as we’ve had a lot of books donated for fundraising (not just folklore, many genres!- these are specific donations and not related to the library), on Sunday May 31st.
1) I might have a few tables for others to also sell for a table rent fee.
2) Would anyone like to help out please?
3) The stage is sitting there… maybe someone might like to arrange/ play chilled Sunday music too??
Cafe might be able to open too with drinks and cakes, so could be a nice day and a great fundraiser!
Do give me a shout if any of this is of interest. 😁
