On This Day (30/03/1912)

After years of financial struggles and even closure, the Great Eastern Railway’s grand quay hotel in Harwich reopened its doors.

Originally built in 1865, the hotel had faced declining trade following the rise of Parkeston Quay. Its closure in 1908 caused uproar among local residents, businesses, and harbour operators.

Following strong public pressure and lobbying from the railway’s Continental Steamship Committee the hotel was refurbished, connected to electricity from Parkeston, and brought back to life.

On This Day (28/03/1915)

As captain of the SS Brussels, Charles Algernon Fryatt was ordered to halt by the German U-boat U-33 while sailing near the Maas lightvessel. Realising the submarine had surfaced to attack, Fryatt instead ordered full speed ahead and attempted to ram it, forcing the U-boat to dive and escape.

In recognition of his bravery and quick thinking, Fryatt was awarded a gold watch by the Admiralty, along with a vellum certificate from the Lords Commissioners. His actions were also formally praised in the House of Commons.

⚓️ A new chapter for this page 🌊

We wanted to share an important update about the future of this page and what will be happening over the coming weeks.

Instead of allowing the page to become inactive, it has been kindly donated so it can continue to be used as a space dedicated to maritime heritage in Harwich and the surrounding areas. Our coastline, harbour and seafaring history have played a huge part in shaping the identity of the town and nearby communities. This page will now aim to celebrate and share that wider maritime story so that local history can continue to be enjoyed and remembered.

To avoid any confusion, this page is no longer connected with the Mayflower Heritage Centre or the former Harwich Mayflower Project. While the Mayflower story will always be an important part of local history, the focus of this page is now much broader. It will cover all aspects of maritime life, including shipbuilding, trade, fishing, passenger travel, naval links and everyday life connected to the sea.

Over the coming weeks you will notice a number of changes. The page will be going through a name change, and all contact details and general information will be updated to reflect its new purpose. The overall look, content and direction of the page will also develop as it moves forward into this new role.

The long term aim is to grow this into something really special for the area. We hope it can become a well known and trusted place for sharing maritime history, and in the future there may be opportunities to support or promote things such as heritage talks, guided walks, local tours and community history projects.

For now the main goal is simple. We want to keep this page active, positive and useful, and to make sure the rich maritime heritage of Harwich and nearby communities continues to be recognised and shared.

If you have old photographs, memories, stories or an interest in local history, you are warmly invited to get involved. Your knowledge and support can help shape what this page becomes in the years ahead.

Thank you to everyone who continues to follow the page. This is a fresh start and an exciting opportunity, and we are looking forward to seeing what can be built together in the future.
