In the Local Studies Room, the museum has a series of local history subject files. These files include information covering a wide range of topics from the America Ground to X-rays!

The lists can be used to find out more about what we have and inform your enquiry or research visit.

There are two series you can browse:

Please note that on Saturday 30th May, the Lower Durbar Hall will be closed all day, and the Upper Durbar Hall and Long Gallery will be closed from 12:30 for a wedding ceremony.

The Brede Steam Giants by Barbara Atkinson:
A Hastings & St Leonards Museum Association Talk

Barbara Atkinson from the Brede Steam Giants charity will tell us the history and significance of the stunning heritage water pumps based a short distance from Brede village but unknown to many local residents. The collection comprises examples of triple expansion and compound steam pumps dating from 1889. The Brede site has two engine houses, dating from 1904 and 1940, containing awe inspiring giant steam pumps, which have been beautifully restored by volunteers.

Also at the Brede works, which can be visited on regular open days, is an incredible Cold War nuclear bunker, which was designed to be used by key staff in charge of the water supply.
