✨ CALLING ALL SOUTH EAST ARTISTS! ✨

We’ve already received some amazing submissions for the Hastings Open 2026 - but we’re not done yet! Have you submitted your work?

Whether you're an established creator or exploring your practice, we can't wait to see what you've been working on. In addition to featuring in our beautiful Long Gallery, selected artworks will also be considered for three prizes.

🏆 The Grand Prize
The overall winner will be celebrated with a Solo Exhibition at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery in 2028/29! We will also consider acquiring your work for our permanent collection.

💼 The Youth Award (Ages 16-25)
Young creatives will be considered for a paid traineeship, gaining invaluable, hands-on curatorial experience with both Hastings Museum & Art Gallery and The blackshed gallery

👥 The People’s Choice Award
A £500 cash prize will be awarded to the artwork that captures the hearts and votes of our gallery visitors.

Happy Sussex day! June 16 is the county day for the historic county of Sussex and celebrates its rich heritage and culture. The event takes place on St Richard's Day, Sussex's patron saint.

A photography course began in March 2026 with students from the East Sussex home education community. Over the course, students explored shape, colour and visual illusion, as well as practising careful observation through documentary photography.

"I am very proud of the work they have created — but even more proud of their involvement, curiosity and enthusiasm for being creative. It has been wonderful to see each student developing their own voice, style and way of seeing the world.

During the course, students also took part in masterclasses with Alma Haser and Jasper James, and visited Picnic, a photography hub in St Leonards, where they gave presentations about their favourite photographers.

One of the loveliest things to see has been the friendships formed during the course, alongside the students’ growing confidence and creativity.

This exhibition celebrates the work they have made during the course. Please come and have a chat with us — we would love to share our love of photography with you."
