Picture of the French Steamship Frederic Franck .

On this day, Sunday 19th April 1896 the Jane sank, 1miles/1.6 Km south of Royal Sovereign Light, after colliding with the French Steamship Frederic Franck which rescued all the crew, landing them at Antwerp.
She was a British sailing barquentine with a cargo of coal on her way to Portsmouth from Sunderland.
Because she sank in water less than 10 fathoms/60ft/18 meters deep her masts were protruding out of the sea.
The Trinity House steamer The Warden found the wreck and removed the fore and mizzen topmasts before marking the wreck with a buoy and a light, then returned to Ramsgate.
Later Trinity House sent the Triton which arrived in Eastbourne the night of the 24th.
The next morning the divers on The Triton went to the Jane in order to remove the remaining masts with explosive. The divers went down wearing their gear weighing 169 lbs./77kg and laid down the explosives charges at the right place.
