Issue 46 of The Waverley is now at the printers and will soon be landing with our members. A downloadable version will also be available shortly in the members’ area of our main website.
Once again, this issue is packed with previously unpublished photographs and fascinating articles, making it a must-read for anyone with an interest in the Waverley Route.
Not a member yet? There’s never been a better time to join the Association and be part of keeping this rich heritage alive. [MGS]

It is with considerable regret that, due to a reduced number of available volunteers, Whitrope Heritage Centre will need to operate on a very limited, ad hoc basis this year rather than offering its usual programme of open days, as previously advertised.

We sincerely appreciate that this may come as a disappointment, and we are especially grateful for your continued patience, support, and understanding during this time. If circumstances improve, we hope to be able to announce occasional open days at short notice.

Volunteers are often present on site at weekends, and at these times we will always do our very best to welcome visitors and, where possible, offer access to the centre and railway.

WRHA members’ free tickets included with this year’s membership can also be used next year.

A very happy Christmas from everyone at Whitrope and the WRHA.

Our Pacer unit 142020 was featured in Great Railway Journeys with the late Victoria Wood (1953-2016) Filmed in summer 1995, the last year before British Rail was privatised, the unit is seen in its original condition. Based at Heaton and sponsored by Tyne & Wear PTE (now Nexus) it operated services around North East England from Newcastle. The closest it came to Whitrope in its working life was just down the road in Carlisle.

It was a regular on the Esk Valley line from Middlesbrough to Whitby throughout the 1990s. Pacers were known affectionately as 'Nodding Donkeys' & notorious for fl**ge squeal as their unforgiving ride left travellers unimpressed. This is replicated on the jointed track we have.

We have been working on externally restoring its TWTPE livery for about 5 years now although inside it carries the refurbished seats installed in 1998 by Northern & are mainly complete.
