Next in our autumnal series: Threads of Identity – Land of Thistles is a collaborative textile project by Andrea Orduña, developed in partnership with Fundación Chol-Chol, Chile.

The exhibition brings together 24 machine-knitted textile pieces by Andrea OrduĂąa and 6 textile pieces woven on the traditional Mapuche loom (witral) by Mapuche weavers from La AraucanĂa.

Organised around six interconnected axes; Earth, Water, Air, Fire, Existence and Consciousness. The project explores identity, territory, memory and the transmission of knowledge.

Inspired by Mapuche worldview, textile traditions and cultural heritage, the project creates a dialogue between machine knitting and traditional Mapuche weaving, and between Chile and Scotland.

Andrea OrduĂąa is a Chilean Textile Designer based in Melrose, Scotland. Her textile practice explores relationships between textiles, identity, place, nature and cultural memory.

Working primarily with machine knitting, she investigates how colour, pattern, repetition, structure and material can communicate ideas and create connections between people and landscapes.

We’re delighted to announce our first exhibition in our autumn series, Earth and Bone; The Shape of Passing, a solo show by ☽ Emily McLatchie 🀐

Emily McLatchie’s practice begins with walking and learning the land around her, gathering earth pigments, bone black and other materials from coastlines, forests and riverbanks through painting, photography, poetry and sound. Those she encounters - a fragment of bone, a stick, a stone - become part of paintings that hold traces of place, memory, weathering and decay.

Through this process, McLatchie reflects on memento mori not as an ending, but as part of the quiet cycle of loss, change, return and renewal, following the threads of life and movement within the land, where nothing is ever truly quiet, still or complete.

We have loved having Contemporary Anxieties by Molly H Kent with us over the last few weeks - here are some of our favourite install shots from the exhibition. Our space is looking a bit empty now as we have a couple of weeks reset before we move into our autumn programme and our next exhibition.

Final day to see Molly Kent’s amazing tapestries, rugs and ceramics. Open until 4pm.

Last weekend, Molly H Kent ran several free workshops for people in and around Hawick to learn how to rug tuft and punch needles. As part of the workshops, Molly learnt from participants about key motifs and symbols that could represent Hawick and is going to weave participants’ work into a community rug for Hawick that will a presented back to the town in Spring 2027. A huge thank you to all participants for their contributions and to Molly for so skilfully leading the workshops. We’re very much looking forward to seeing what Molly creates. An extended thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund for enabling these workshops to happen with their grant funding!
