Join Toby Fountain, from Herefordshire Wildlife Trust for an enlightening talk about the counties unsung hero, the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.

The lesser spotted woodpecker (Dryobates minor) has a mythical reputation amongst wildlife and bird enthusiasts, which is regarded as one of Britain’s rarest and arguably most mysterious breeding bird. But Herefordshire has a very special relationship with this fascinating little bird; largely due to our unique abundance of a magical, folkloric habitat which offers these mythical birds a rare haven: traditional orchard. In this talk Toby Fountain from Herefordshire Wildlife Trust who is conducting surveys for this species in Herefordshire, will delve into the extraordinary complexity of this bird’s ecology and why the county of Herefordshire, due it’s abundance of ancient woodland and orchard, may prove to be a national stronghold for this remarkable species.

You can find a lot more than apples in an orchard! While out harvesting fruit at our Breinton Orchard, the Museum's Director came across this fantastic caterpillar 🐛

This Pale Tussock Moth Caterpillar can be found in orchards across the UK, munching on tree leaves until they enter their cocoons in around the end of September. Be careful though, as the hairs on this caterpillar have been know to cause allergic reactions to some unfortunate fruit pickers who got too close! Its always best to enjoy wild animals from a distance and leave them to their business 🦋
