Canwood Gallery

Canwood Gallery Contemporary art & sculpture gallery in rural Herefordshire. Free entry. Space to pause & reflect. The driver took him to the Tate and refused to take any fee.

Closed over Winter
In 1973 the gallery owner became seriously ill with leukemia, and was sent down to Bart’s hospital, in London as part of a medical trial. Such was his treatment that at one occasion his weight fell to 5 stone, which for a 30 year old man was quite ominous. When his treatment allowed he decided to venture out and took a black cab and asked where he could go to see something insp

irational. Upon walking into the Tate the first thing he saw and found great inspiration in was the controversial Karl Andre’s bricks. It was the first of many visits. Whether it was the escape and inspiration from the art or the treatment he was the only person in his batch of 12 to survive and to this day . It has always been his desire to give something back and to build a gallery in Herefordshire where people could experience great art for free. All profits will be donated to St Barts Medical research.

BECOMING opening Thursday 4 June 11am-4pm at Canwood Gallery.

The galleries are a hive of activity as we prepare for our next exhibitions.

This Thursday, BECOMING by Jane Tudge launches, an extraordinary journey through the seasons of a country garden on the Herefordshire and Worcestershire border, exploring growth, transformation and our deep connection to the natural world.

Through breathtaking photography, sculpture and immersive installation, Jane captures moments of emergence, beauty and change, inviting us to look more closely and rediscover the quiet magic unfolding in our gardens and landscapes every day.

Rooted in observation, wonder and the rhythms of the seasons, BECOMING is a celebration of nature's endless capacity to surprise, inspire and transform.

We wanted to say a very heartfelt thank you to the Common Senses artists who provided an exceptional exhibition during May. They were such a joy to work with, and the comments and sales were a testament to their skill and hard work.

We would also like to thank everyone who visited and purchased artwork. We are immensely grateful for your support.

It is always a little sad when an exhibition comes to an end, but what a wonderful month it has been.

Thank you all. ❤️

“Poles Apart” a sculpture that feels especially relevant in today’s world.

Perhaps a moment for reflection: the same materials, rooted in the same beautiful landscape, yet the differences remain clearly marked. Is the hope for unity still possible?

We’d love your thoughts. Open Thursday to Sunday, 11–4.

Meet the Artist | Johanna Okon-Watkins
📍 Canwood Gallery
📅 22 May & 31 May
🖼 Common Senses, open until 30 May 2026

Join us to meet ceramic artist Johanna Okon-Watkins and explore a practice shaped through intuition, material and making.

Working directly with clay, Johanna creates abstract ceramic forms that push the material to its limits, embracing texture, rupture and transformation. Inspired by sea life, fungi, mosses and her Central European heritage, her work explores the relationship between surface and hidden interior, what protects, reveals and conceals.

Meet the Artist | Ian Pennell
📍 Canwood Gallery
📅 21 May, 23 May & 29 May
🖼 Common Senses, open until 30 May 2026

Join us to meet artist Ian Pennell and discover a practice shaped by walking, mapping and close observation of landscape.

Working across drawing, photography and site responsive processes, Ian explores place through movement, tracing routes and recording overlooked details within both rural and built environments. For Common Senses, Pennell has been walking the public footpath network surrounding Canwood and across the wider Woolhope Dome, translating these journeys into GPS mappings and atmospheric cyanotype works.

New in Open Thursday - Sunday 11am - 4pm

Discover the extraordinary sculptural world of Andy Stevens, where mythology, philosophy and recycled materiality collide. Fast gaining critical recognition, Stevens’ Winged Minotaur series transforms reclaimed objects into intricate contemporary sculptures that explore identity, transformation and the tensions between instinct and transcendence. These are works that reward time, each encounter revealing new layers, hidden details and unexpected moments of wonder.

Textile artist Mandy Roland-Smith’s beautifully tactile works can be experienced as part of Common Senses at Canwood Gallery from 1–30 May 2026.

Working with local fleeces, natural dyes and traditional needle felting techniques, Roland-Smith creates deeply atmospheric textile works exploring memory, impermanence and our relationship with the natural world. Her sustainable practice reflects the circular rhythms of life, death and renewal, with materials intended to eventually return to the earth.

Following a career as a psychotherapist, Mandy returned to art and graduated from Hereford College of Arts in 2025, where she was awarded the Sustainability Award. Her work has since been exhibited at Wells Cathedral and the Surface Design Show in London as part of GreenGrads.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet Mandy at Canwood Gallery on 16th May and 24th May.

Open Thursday–Sunday, 11am–4pm
Free entry

Mandy work can also be explored online https://canwoodgallery.org/artist/mandy-roland-smith/
