✨Mystery Object from Roman Kenchester ✨

This ornate Roman bronze fragment, shaped like a leaf, was excavated at Kenchester (the site of the Roman town of Magnis) during excavations in 1912-13. Today, it forms part of our Roman collection.

What makes this object particularly fascinating is that we are not entirely sure what it was used for. Can you help us identify what this mysterious leaf-shaped fragment might have been? The hole at the top may have allowed it to be attached to another object, perhaps as a decorative fitting on furniture, a vessel, or even military horse harnesses. Its good condition suggests that it may have served a more decorative than practical purpose.

Whatever its original function, this beautifully crafted piece reflects the Roman love of naturalistic decoration. Let us know in the comments what you think it might have been used for.

🦉Silent Hunter of the Night🍂

This week we are delving into our taxidermy collection to take a closer look at one of its feathered residents, a magnificent barn owl, Tyto alba, whose name translates to “white owl”. With its heart-shaped face and silent flight, the barn owl is one of Britain’s most recognisable birds.

Displaying some lovely autumnal touches, our female barn owl sits atop a fencepost decorated with lichen, while three orange flowers and a mushroom rest at its base.

Our taxidermy collection includes many different owl species, and this stunning specimen helps us explore the features that make these remarkable hunters so successful. Can you spot its powerful talons, soft feathers and sharp beak? Every feature is perfectly adapted for hunting.

Throughout history, barn owls have been known by nicknames including ‘ghost owl’, ‘demon owl’, ‘church owl’ and ‘screech owl’, reflecting their ghostly appearance and their eerie calls.

🐂👻 Could this s***f box hold a ghost?🐂👻

According to Herefordshire folklore, after Sir Thomas Vaughan, known as "Black Vaughan", lost his head during the Wars of the Roses, his restless spirit refused to leave this world.

Legend tells that his ghost appeared as a fearsome black bull, prowling the countryside alongside a terrifying bloodhound. The haunting became so troublesome that Black Vaughan's spirit was eventually exorcised and trapped inside this very s***f box.

But the bloodhound? 👀 Some say it remained at large, continuing to strike fear into those who crossed its path.

The tale became so famous that it is said to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic mystery The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Whether you believe the legend or not, this remarkable object is a fascinating reminder of Herefordshire's rich folklore and ghostly past.
