Artist’s Valley ‘Weekend away’ to the fantastic Ffestiniog Show at Y Ganolfan, Porthmadog (just next to FFWHR’s Harbour Station) - a real community show with a v friendly vibe, and lots of local families enjoying a day out. Much appreciated helping hand from Dad, who took on the driving and much of the heavy lifting, along with many helping hands from the Ffestiniog’s boundlessly positive volunteers.

These snaps give a flavour of the whole exhibition ‘journey’; packing up the van at home ahead of the big journey, including testing and sorting the stock boxes. Setting up in the centre on Friday afternoon. The interested crowds throughout Saturday and Sunday, who were really engaged asking Qs like the scenery, etc. A selection of the running sessions. And finally, the ‘holiday bit’ - the few hours in evening and early morn where we enjoyed the picturesque peace of Porthmadog’s stunning slate harbour, with our accommodation overlooking both the boats and the FFWHR station, as trains chuffed out across the Cob and up into the peaks of Snowdonia.

It’s that ‘exhibition’ time of year, as we’re doing it all again next weekend! But bit smaller, taking 009 gauge Penorwic Slate Quarry across to RailEx in Aylesbury (Stoke Mandeville Stadium), whilst Artist’s Valley recovers from its weekend. Come say hi if in Buckinghamshire!

‘Crimson tide’ as Artists Valley migrates to a Peak District setting, test driving 1st of Rapido Trains UK stunning -liveried coaches, paired with a tasty selection of locos: Spinner, 2-4-0, Compound, Jinty, inside & outside framed 0-6-0s.

Now, wouldn’t a Johnson ‘Spinner’ or Kirtley 2-4-0 make a lovely RTR model to go with your beautiful carriages, hint hint …?

I’ve been looking forward to the exquisite Rapido Trains UK ‘Evolution’ coaches, especially in this ravishing fully lined Midland Railway Crimson livery; but have been bowled by a ‘double whammy’ with Rapido’s unexpected (and very welcome) announcement of the handsome LYR Lancashire & Yorkshire Barton-Wright ‘Ironclad’ 0-6-0 (of which I happen to have a v nicely finished kit build 😉).

So, I offer up back to fab folks of , the “ghost of Christmas future”*! They’ve been asking for snaps of their stunning clerestories out in the wild, so why not show off how they might look attached to their latest loco project? Few more snaps to follow with Midland engines…

* don’t think the Ironclad is actually due to land by Xmas - mid-2027 more likely - though Scrooge will still be recovering from the ‘Evolution’ wallet damage wrought by so many fine pre-grouping liveries landing over coming months. LBSCR, GNR & SDJR photo sessions on their way…

The absolute beauty that is Hornby Model Railways’ new ‘Saint’ No 2975 “Lord Palmer,” showing off Churchward’s splendid fully lined Great Western green livery on a glorious day in Artist’s Valley - drawing a couple of different coach rakes, some Genesis Victorian 4/6 wheelers and some Dean Clerestories.

The scenic setting brings the Saint’s stunning detail to life, and the GWR green really ‘pops’ on this model - I think this is one of the best RTR renditions to date (a huge improvement on the ‘blueish’ hue of some!). Good match alongside the Bachmann City, here renamed to Atbara conversion pioneer 3700 “Durban”. The Saint class had an inspiring array of names, and 2975 himself will be undergoing an identity change over coming days - I’m feeling she deserves the loftiness of 2901 “Lady Superior”.

I’ve hankered for a decent RTR Saint for decades, having collected a number of kit builds over the years. I’m chuffed to bits that Hornby have really booted the ball out the park with this model - an absolute corker. Beyond Artist’s Valley (which I often frame as a Welsh Marches location), another well-progressing project is modelling Hereford station (1910s-1960s), on the ‘North & West’ Cardiff-Shrewsbury route. This was a mainstay ‘stomping ground’ for 29xx operations, with Hereford’s 85C Barton shed being where many of them ended their running lives in the 1940s-50s. So I anticipate one or two more may join, especially as Hornby release other liveries… (hint hint).

Let the photos do the Saintly singing…!

“Rhapsody in Blue” | ’s recently released J15 0-6-0 in Great Eastern Railway Ultramarine livery - with a matching rake of Genesis GER brown 4&6 wheel coaches - strutting the catwalk like the drop-dead gorgeous ‘supermodel’ it is.

Bit of fun in the last hour of Swansea Show… courtesy of the guys running “Museum of Transport” layout nextdoor, an 1850s / 1950s interlude with Hornby Model Railways Liverpool & Manchester “Tiger” + early carriages, and Rapido Trains UK “Lion” + Titfield Thunderbolt bar - being driven (appropriately enough for silly hour) by a pair of big steamy kitties.

A fantastic (and brilliantly organised!) Swansea Show at the LC Swansea, with Artist’s Valley drawing a good crowd - loads of family fun and interest as well as in depth modellers discussions. Ran a variety of regions and era over course of the weekend - here’s a sample selection 🙂

Huge thanks to Iron Mink Andy for helping as co-controller over the weekend!

Installation of working signals - initial fixed ‘single post’ placeholders, and then the fabulous working bracket signals came through… v chuffed!

Now have the green light for… Working signals! Particularly love the counterweight ‘bounce’ on these Dapol beauties, when they return to the ‘danger’ (up) position.
