Cawfields Quarry destroyed a section of Hadrian’s Wall during the 20th century exposing the 300 million year old Whin sill rock it was built on. Today it’s a peaceful place to break for a bite to eat whilst walking the National trail or visiting Milecastle 42 just visible centre left

One of the most remarkable finds to come out of the trenches at the Carlisle Excavations are the early 3rd Century IMP stamped tiles which were used in the hypocaust stacks within the palatial building. Tiles on roman military sites are normally stamped with the legion or unit which produced them but at Carlisle they carry the imperial stamp which make this site special. Recently IMP tiles have been discovered at the fort of Magna on Hadrian’s wall opening up a whole new line of enquiry

Another excavation completed at Carlisle Cricket club for 2026 with some lovely finds and the team did a superb job uncovering the Hadrianic Roman road with what appears to be an earlier surface underneath. It’s a site which just keeps on giving. Hopefully more in 2027.

The autumn excavation at Carlisle Cricket club concludes this Saturday with the team examining the northern end of the palatial building dating to the 3rd century and a second trench exploring the area to the south east of the site.
