Explore a new collection of functional ceramics by Nigel Lambert in the gallery this month...
Nigel Lambert's slip-decorated wood-fired earthenware is both ornamental and useful. His thrown and altered pots combine bold contemporary shapes, with his unique style of decoration and strong sense of function. Nigel's love of pottery and paintings began whilst at art college in Cornwall. His interest in the work of abstract painters has influenced his ceramics and the decorative marks he makes.
Clay is the starting point. Pots are thrown on a kick wheel or handbuilt from flat sheets of clay, cut and re-formed into oval and square forms. The pots are dipped in a white clay slip, dried, and coated with green, amber and clear glazes. This produces a flat surface on which the blue oxides are painted, with new and old brushes, and odd bits of sponge, string and grass. Lines and motifs are often scratched through the blue, adding another narrative to the image.
Nigel established his first workshop in Bristol in 1987, moving to the Forest of Dean in 1990, where he still lives and works. Nigel's work is held in many public and private collections, and he has exhibited widely in England, Europe and Australia.
