Big Wave Surfing in Ireland 🤙

Exposed to the storm swells breaking in on the North Atlantic, Ireland has become one of the most renowned big wave surf spots.

🌊Big wave surfing has become a competitive sport in its own right, and Ireland boasts some of the largest waves in the world.

Surfing these larger waves is dangerous and requires specialist training for those brave enough to try and surf them.

In the winter of 1993, a team of pioneers set off from London with one goal: to make the first overland journey to New York.

On the team was Belfast student Jenny McConnell (née Ballagh). At 21, she was the youngest member of the team, but was no stranger to adventure.

When did surfing make its debut at the Olympics? 🏆

As surfing moved into the 21st century, a new generation of local surfers was emerging.

And in 2021, after years of discussion, competitive surfing finally made its debut at the Olympics.

Being a female surfer in a male dominated sport? 🏄‍♀️

As in so many sports, the face of surfing was male dominated, infused with macho demonstrations of ability.

🏅The first Irish National Championships were held in 1967, but it wasn't until 1981 that a women's category was included.

While this was a step forward, opportunities to compete were still few and far between for women during the 80s and 90s.

The Troubles didn’t stop these Irish surfers 💪

🏄‍♂️ The rise of surfing coincided with the beginning of The Troubles, the term commonly used to describe the violent civil and political conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 60s until the late 1990s.

For some surfers in Northern Ireland, the waves represented an escape from the realities of what was happening across the country during this period.

With increased security checks at border crossings, travel between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland became more challenging, but this did not stop surfers from Northern Ireland regularly making the trip to the west coast of the island in pursuit of great waves.
