👉Found and collected objects.
Found objects have a provenance: they bring with them their own stories, their own histories, even if we don’t know them.

'All my work begins from this point: whether it begins with photographing a dress, or sourcing specific types of objects such as the doll furniture or fencing jackets. Sometimes, a little of the history comes with the objects I collect; often it is just the signs of use and wear that tell the object’s story.

The intentional placing of collected objects creates a space: a space for ideas to be exchanged, for thoughts and stories to be written. There is a dynamism in this potential space, the relationships between the objects in this room is where an infinite number of possibilities reside: in the lost histories of the objects themselves, and in the infinite number of viewer experiences, memories and connections that will be created.' More printing fun with local school pupils in Exmouth 🎨

The THG upper stairwell features Gillian Taylor’s artwork commemorating the end of the Danish postal service.

is a Devon-based paper artist. As well as larger installations, she makes collections of tiny gold-lined envelopes, flowers and boats, using different kinds of papers including maps, books, music, old postcards and letters.

Her work is inspired by the way we communicate and how that has changed over time. She is fascinated with handwritten correspondence and the memories shared in letters.

Through slow, hand-made processes, she aims to give new life to old documents, inviting close inspection, reflection and human connection.

Imposter objects: everything in the exhibition feels recognisable; but not everything is as it seems. This is deliberate.

"I use the word imposters but you might want to think of them as cuckoos in the nest. Objects that blur the viewer’s perception of their use, application and meaning, where nothing is quite what it seems. There is an ambivalence, a blurring of what is a domestic object, and what is not. There is also a link to imposter syndrome which ties in here too. A good example of this is the brushes and their various uses, many lost to time, but all showing repetitive use. There are ‘imposter objects’ here: questioning where ‘domestic’ labour begins and ends.' Mellony Taper

The domestic setting of All This Useless Beauty alludes to the fact that Thelma Hulbert Gallery was a previously a home.

Artist Mellony Taper said,
"It has been a joy to create a body of work for a space that was once a female artist’s home and studio, where the layout of the building is still recognisably familial. I have worked with this in my design of the exhibition: a nursery upstairs, living spaces downstairs.

Elements like the table and drawers are recognisably functional domestic furniture: working together with the artworks and installations to create an immersive domestic rhythm."
