The camps of the East Norfolk Militia are fully interactive and open to explore, giving visitors a real insight into what Georgian life might have been like in the Napoleonic era.

(Not our rum, unfortunately — although militia units were often billeted in inns, taverns, and public buildings while on the march.)

Around 1809, local pub landlords and innkeepers could be required to provide food and accommodation for militia regiments such as the East Norfolk Militia, receiving payment at government-set rates for doing so. We’ve tried explaining this arrangement to modern pub landlords… but so far none of them fancy re-enacting that part with us.

Slow Motion take of our muskets firing at Costessey.

The East Norfolk Militia have a close connection to Costessey, as this would have been the first stop over after a day of marching French prisoners from Great Yarmouth harbour, en-route to King's Lynn, by the customs house. Where we will be later in the year.

Spent a pleasant (but windy) hour with the Militia on board the Spanish galleon "Andalusia" We got the crew (French and Dutch!!!) singing along with us in a few shanties. Not a single visitor to the ship while we were there questioned why there were 1800's soldiers on board a 1500's ship. I blame the National Curriculum
