We’re sure tourists will be heading from the train station straight to the beach with a hot long weekend ahead -- a longstanding tradition in our city since the station opened in September 1841. 🚞

The Morning Post rightfully anticipated that access to our ‘fascinating watering place’ from the trains will, ’for a long time, be a novelty to the fashionable visitors of Brighton’.

Whether you’re a local or part of the throngs from the Big Smoke, our beaches will always welcome you! 🌞🌊

EVENT: Tea Leaf to Tea Bag: a history of tea & the rituals that surround it 🫖
Saturday 13th June, 10:30 - 15:30

This June, join social and cultural historian Sarah Tobias at The Regency Town House for Tea Leaf to Tea Bag, a fascinating day exploring the history of tea, how it shaped everyday life, and the rituals and customs that still surround our national drink today.

From the origins of Camellia Sinensis to silver teapots, fine china, elegant tea tables and the tradition of afternoon tea, the day will trace the story of tea through history right up to the modern tea bag.

The event includes illustrated talks, tea tastings, tea and biscuits, and plenty of time to enjoy the special atmosphere of the Town House. Guests are invited to bring a packed lunch.

"But indeed I would rather have nothing but tea.”
Jane Austen, Mansfield Park

Welcome to the final weekend of an Artists Open Houses exhibition where art, science and the history of medicine collide.

We’re delighted to host BioArt Transformations, a fascinating exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Anna Dumitriu, whose work explores the strange and deeply human stories hidden within disease, contagion, scientific discovery and technological change.

Using living bacteria, DNA, textiles and digital technologies, Dumitriu creates hauntingly beautiful objects that draw connections between past and future - from plague history and early medicine to synthetic biology, genomics and AI. Her work asks big questions about what it means to be human in an age of rapid scientific transformation.

Whether you’re interested in art, history, science, medicine or simply curious about the world around you, this is an exhibition that stays with you long after you leave.

Open until this Sunday 17th May, 10am-5pm every day in the legendary Basement of No 10, Brunswick Square.

Free admission

Step back in time at The Regency Town House with a wonderfully immersive afternoon of Regency history, gossip, tea and cake…

On Sunday 7 June, the formidable Mrs Finnegan and the ever-proper Mr Cubbage invite you behind the scenes of a grand Regency household for a special historic house tour unlike any other. You’ll explore the servants’ quarters, venture upstairs into the elegant drawing and dining rooms, and hear what life was really like “below stairs” in Brighton’s Regency heyday.

And because no Regency afternoon would be complete without refreshments, the tour finishes with tea and freshly baked cake served in the atmospheric Regency kitchen.

✨ Includes a copy of Mrs Finnegan’s masterpiece "Love, Life and Laxatives" ✨

Places are limited and these events tend to sell out quickly.

Did you hear the word? Mrs. Finnegan and a gaggle of her closest and dearest were spotted parading through the streets of Brighton last Saturday! Our Butler, Mr Cubbage, was absolutely aghast hearing that the housekeeper had left the dirty work to someone else for the day.

All was not in vain, though, for our lovely ladies were not simply promenading for the sake of it. Nay, they were spreading news of our summer events!

We’ve got an excellent schedule here at the Town House, and we’d be delighted if you join us - if only to save Mrs Finnegan from a butler’s wrath.

She’ll be hosting a tour with Cubbage on the 7th of June, running from 2 - 4pm.

The weekend after, we have cultural historian Sarah Tobias delivering a talk on the elaborate rituals of tea.

In July, we’ll be hosting the Brunswick Town Tour, an immersive journey into the history of the area.

Last, but certainly not least, we’ll be hosting an exclusive exhibition, delivering the highlights of our House Collections.

We’re looking forward to showing off some beautiful artefacts of local history.

Here at The Regency Town House, we hope you're spending the May Bank Holiday weekend enjoying the sun and having a peek inside at the open house exhibitions (especially ours!).

The May Bank Holiday is actually rooted in the modern labour rights movement, and we thought we’d highlight a little bit of that history today.

While Regency Brighton brings to mind the grand houses of the seafront, much like ours, another story was being written in print shops, on street corners, and in the open air.

Radicalism in the South of England was rooted in the free press and Chartist ideology. The early 1800s saw short-lived newsletters like Dr William King's The Co-Operator (1828 - 1830) and The Brighton Patriot (1835 - 1830).

Eventually, the railways would bring union organisation down the tracks from the north. By the 1890s, the Brighton Anarchist Group was holding open-air meetings on The Level and along the beachfront by the Aquarium every week.

This flyer from our archives shows just how important the press was as a method of organising.

Here at the Town House - an unapologetically upper-class establishment - we think it matters to hold both stories at once. The Regency wasn't just chandeliers and card parties. It was also hunger, protest, and solidarity.

Our volunteer research team are particularly interested in the roots of social history, and is run by our resident historian, Chris Nichols.

If you’re interested in more of Brighton’s radical history - check out his event commemorating the 1926 General Strike / The Battle Of Lewes Road in on Saturday, May 9th - https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/commemorating-the-battle-of-lewes-road-tickets-1987047718215?aff=oddtdtcreator

🏡 HOUSE OF THE MONTH:
No 7 Brunswick Square 🏡

Despite being one of the narrowest houses on the square (we like to call it a 'pepper pot' house), April's House of the Month, number 7 Brunswick Square, is possibly one of our longest house histories.

So long in fact, that it has been divided into 8 chapters, each focusing on one particular resident or family. We hear chapter 7 is the raciest...

The story begins in the post-Regency era, continues through the entirety of the railway-connected Victorian era and into the 20th Century. It survived the horror of one World War and lingered up to the dark days immediately prior to the outbreak of another. It's time to step inside and meet the people for whom this was home.

Researched by our volunteer David.
