I handed my bank over to two Steves and a David for three days.

What could possibly go wrong?

Turns out, absolutely nothing.

They turned Bank into a pop-up darkroom as part of Ilfracombe Photography Festival, and it was brilliant.

Film, cameras, chemicals, printing and a whole load of knowledge being shared.

And that was just at Bank!

The whole town was buzzing with exhibitions, talks, workshops, screenings and loads of amazing photography.

Hats off to everyone involved in pulling off such a fantastic festival. I absolutely loved being part of it.

And a massive thank you to the two Steves and David (who stood in on the Saturday) for taking over BANK.

Same time next year?

We’ve got very cool neighbours.

Not long after we opened a bank, my neighbours opened Where We Create, a co-work space here in Ilfracombe.

As part of Ilfracombe photography festival last weekend they had a bloke who turned up and built a camera the size of a room.

That bloke was Brendan Barry, and the camera was a giant camera obscura. It was so big he developed the photographs inside it. So much fun to have a go.

Then there were talks from some seriously talented people who’ve worked in photography for decades. Loved hearing their stories, how they all know each other and how their careers have crossed over the years.

And then there was a party. With DJs and the most incredible styling.

Penny and Lee, you’re creating such a buzz in our small town. Love having you as neighbours.

If you are lonely working from home and want to be part of this, check them out.

It’s not just Where We Create.

It’s where cool things happen.

I opened a bank.
Now we’re making old school photographs.

Nathan Rutherford brought wet plate photography to our old bank as part of Ilfracombe Photography Festival.

I deliberately didn’t look into the process beforehand. I wanted to go in knowing absolutely nothing.

A lot of technical chemical magic with metal plates and an old camera. So cool.

Huge thanks to Nathan for such a brilliant, informative workshop. Loved every minute.

I’ll share Mr Bank’s portrait as soon as I get my hands on it.

CONFESSION… I opened Bank for slightly selfish reasons.

I love being around creative people. I love the chat, the ideas, the laughter and someone saying, “Have you thought about doing it this way?” Art school studio vibes.

Working on your own can be bloody boring.

So I bought a ridiculously big table and started inviting people round.

And now look what’s happened!

Last Makers Social was ace. A table full of new faces, everyone making, chatting and getting on like they’d known each other for years.

We’re doing it all again on Tuesday 20 October and places are filling up.

Come on your own, bring a project, start something new or just come for the company.

We’ll put the kettle on and have the flapjacks.

I blame Frida.

I’ve always had a thing for colour, Mexican art and doing things a bit differently.

That’s how Dead Good Day of the Dead Mosaics was born.

Turns out you lot love a colourful day of the dead stuff as much as I do.

First workshop SOLD OUT.
Second workshop SOLD OUT.

And we haven’t even had the first one yet!

So we’re going for a hat-trick.

Third date coming soon. If you missed out, keep your eyes peeled.

Can’t wait to get you all around that big old table.

This is exactly the sort of weekend I want people to come to Ilfracombe for.

From Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th October, the Ilfracombe Photography Festival takes over town.

There’s a giant camera obscura at Where We Create, talks, films, exhibitions, workshops and a pop-up darkroom at Bank.

Loads happening. Loads to discover. It’s the perfect excuse for a few days by the sea.

I’ve got availability at Paramount Apartments this weekend too.

Come for the coast. Come for the photography. Come because Ilfracombe is doing something really bloody interesting.

This is creative tourism.

And I am absolutely here for it.

M A K E R S’ S O C I A L

A table full of people who mostly didn’t know each other. Making stuff. Talking. Laughing. Swapping ideas. And by the end, Bank was buzzing.

This is exactly why I started Makers Social.

Come on your own of with mates. Bring whatever you’re working on. Sit at the big table.

You won’t be on your own for long.

Next one in two weeks.

If you’re new here, hi.

I’m Helen and I’m trying to create something a bit different in Ilfracombe.

Bank is for the people who live here AND the people who come here.

Come around the big table. Make something. Learn a new skill. Meet new people. Eat together. Get offline for a bit. Try something you’ve never done before.

And then there’s Paramount.

I love the idea of people coming to Ilfracombe for more than just a few days by the sea. Stay at Paramount, book a workshop at Bank, discover the artists, makers, galleries and brilliant independent places we have here.

Creative tourism.

Come with your partner, your mate, your mum, your sister. Have a holiday with a difference and go home having learnt something new and new pals.

If you already live here? Even better. Come and be part of it.

I want these two businesses to bring people together, support what’s happening locally and show off the creative side of Ilfracombe.

So whether you live down the road or 200 miles away, come and find us.

Tag the person you’d bring along.

Bank & Paramount Apartments.
