Auchindrain Township

Auchindrain Township Auchindrain is a living testament to Scotland’s rural heritage. This remarkably preserved township offers a unique glimpse into Scotland’s past.

A museum since 1964, Auchindrain provides an opportunity to explore and connect with our shared history. Bail’ Ach’ an Droighinn, better known as Auchindrain Township, sits somewhere between modern Inverary and the Iron Age, a unique survival unchanged since the infamous Highland Clearances which saw thousands of Scots scattered worldwide. Auchindrain, an historic township near Inveraray, Argyll,

is as important to Scottish history as Skara Brae in Orkney, Culloden or any of the country’s great castles. Here, preserved lovingly, is Scotland’s real history. No tales here of castles and kings, this is Scotland’s past in all its raw intensity.

Volunteer OPEN DAY, THIS FRIDAY, 22nd May!

Come along and help us bring Highland history to life!

Auchindrain Township Museum is a special place, and our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Whether you're passionate about Scottish heritage, love meeting visitors from around the world, or simply want to spend time in a beautiful and peaceful setting, we'd love to hear from you.

We're looking for friendly, enthusiastic people to help with a range of activities including welcoming visitors, sharing the township's stories, supporting events and activities, helping with conservation work, gardening and grounds maintenance, or assisting with archival and research projects. No previous experience is necessary – just an interest in preserving this unique piece of Highland history and a willingness to learn.

Volunteering at Auchindrain is incredibly rewarding. You'll gain new skills, meet like-minded people, and play a vital role in keeping Scotland's only surviving Highland farming township alive for future generations. We provide full training and support, and we're flexible with commitment levels – whether you can spare a few hours a month or want to volunteer regularly, you'll make a real difference.
