Ipswich Maritime Trust

Ipswich Maritime Trust Supporting Past, Present and Future. These included a summer exhibition in the ‘Home’ warehouse (now Ashton KCJ office).

Ipswich Maritime Trust was formed in 1982 (Registration No: 1696918 Registered under Charities Act 1960 No:286603) from the Maritime Ipswich Committee, which organised a year long series of events as part of the Maritime England Initiative. IMT then prepared a visionary plan for the then run-down Wet Dock. It would be extravagant to claim that the Trust brought about the current development acti

vity, but it was instrumental in galvanising local opinion, and, through its many initiatives, keeping its vision in the forefront of local consciousness until commercial opportunities came to be grasped. If you are interested in joining IPSWICH MARITIME TRUST we hold regular lectures at the University of Suffolk on local maritime subjects, run a Maritime Window Museum on Albion Quay on the Ipswich Waterfront, hold an extensive archive of historical photographs of the Ipswich Docks area, and many more activities. Such as hold social events and outings, issues a six monthly Newsletter and are closely involved with advising on developments in the Wet Dock / Waterfront area, educating and spreading awareness and interest in the rich maritime history of Ipswich and it's surrounding area, click on the link below for membership details.. www.ipswichmaritimetrust.org.uk

History helps us all make sense of the world around us.

So it's even more impressive that Ipswich's schoolchildren have their own town's maritime history on the curriculum.

Our talk tomorrow night - Putting Ipswich's Maritime Heritage on the School Curriculum - is by Dale Banham, education consultant and part-time History teacher at Northgate, who worked with our Ipswich Heritage Harbour Project team to create imaginative resources for Ipswich's primary and secondary school children.

Join us for an inspirational talk!

Wednesday 3rd June at 7.45pm in the Top Room at Isaacs on the Quay. (Lift available to top floor). Free.

We really enjoyed our time at the Suffolk Family History Society Maritime Fair at The Hold Suffolk Archives - and were thrilled to link up two members of the Hubert shipbuilding family.

Visitors and stall holders at the Suffolk Family History Society Maritime Fair on Saturday 9th May at The Hold came from far and wide. But IMT member Phil Hubert, part of the team on our stand, was welcomed with open arms by someone on the neighbouring stand. Sammie Hubert, a relative by marriage, h...

Shefarers from Suffolk and Essex celebrated International Day for Women in Maritime on Monday 18th May 2026 by joining the Global Women’s Walk for a ramble along the river Orwell. The group, made up of boat officer, yacht sailors, barge crew, sail training skipper, boatyard boss, and maritime historian, headed from Woolverstone Marina to the Butt and Oyster pub in Pin Mill where they were met by members of the Shefarers Shanty Singers for a meal and exchange of experiences.

The Shefarers came together in 2023 through the Ipswich-based SPILL Festival who commissioned two artists from the Hamburg-based Secret Agency collective. The artists took over Sailing Barge Victor, christened her Victoria, and enabled local women and girls to share their stories and be part of the worldwide network of women working in the maritime world. Ipswich Maritime Trust was one of the sponsors.
