🐧 The last thing we expected…

While deep in the tunnels today, we accidentally stumbled across a small family of penguins.

To say we're surprised is an understatement.

❄️ Specimens have adapted remarkably well to underground life.

🎣 We're expanding our Lost & Found to include "Missing Penguins".

We’ve started cleaning some of the original Flotex flooring inside the canteen. After more than 40 years of grime, slime and dirt, the original 1970s/80s pattern had almost completely disappeared.

We’re carefully jet washing the surface to lift the dirt, then vacuuming it away with a wet vac.

Slowly but surely the original pattern is starting to reappear!

Take a look at the photos and videos to see the progress so far.

It’s a messy job, but very satisfying bringing a small piece of Drakelow’s history back to life.

Our original Cold War ‘Woods’ extract fan installed in the 1980s hadn’t been run in a long long time! We thought it would be a good idea to test it. Sadly it needed some love after being sat since the late 1990s. We got it restored and it is now back in place and helps draw out moisture from various points within the museum

As the annual poppy appeal approaches, Neil Thomas looks at the work of its organiser, Royal British Legion. This Autumn sees many of us enacting an annual custom that has endured for more than a century. We’ll buy and wear a poppy. Remembrance poppies have been worn in Britain since 1921, when th...

Drakelow Tunnels are looking for new Volunteers!!

Are you twiddling your thumbs on a Saturday?

If you can help us on our work parties and open days we'd love to have you down!

Whether you are an electrician, engineer or just good with a scraper and broom, we accept all.

We have a minimum age of 18 allowed but no upper age limit.

Please note, our tunnels are not designed to be wheelchair friendly due to various raised flooring from our blast doors.

Contact us using the message button on Facebook and we'll let you know of the next work party date.

Drakelow Tunnels welcomed the UK's International Search and Rescue (ISAR) team underground.

This included members from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Leics ISAR and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue service.

They used the Drakelow Tunnels Museum section to help train for various scenarios which included deploying Kent's Search & Rescue Dog, Millie, to find 3 'lost' volunteers around our complex.

Once found through her sense of smell, Millie would bark and jump to alert the location of the 'casualty'.

Drakelow Tunnels has been used for training from both the ISAR and West Midlands Ambulance Serivce's HART groups as a challenging location for training.

We are pleased in allowing our emergency services the use of our tunnels for their vital training.

If your team is looking for a location, please contact us by sending us a message and we'll get back to you.
