We love nothing more than threading stories for our visitors. From tales in the cottage kitchen, to celebrating the craft of weaving, perhaps taking a slight detour into the history of our heritage garden in the process, we're honoured to keep the tales of the Kilbarchan weavers alive!

🧵Meet the shuttles 🧵

They may appear unassuming, but this piece of equipment is amongst the most crucial in the weaving process. These shuttles carry the weft threads across the warp threads upon the loom. 🪡

In 1733 - within the midst of the Industrial Revolution - the first flying shuttle was patented. This new design permitted a solitary weaver to pass the shuttle between the threads. Such a development in technology would permit an increase in fabric production, and a reduction in the number of workers required to facilitate the process.

For all that it may appear a small change in the weaving process, this piece of equipment would mark a step towards the arrival of the power loom.

Be sure to ask the team about the flying shuttles on your next visit to Weaver's Cottage!

💕The kitchen: the heart of the home 💕

With 300 years of history behind it, we can only imagine the stories that have been shared within the kitchen here at Weaver's Cottage.

It may be small, but this space would have been truly mighty, it very much the hub of the home for the family - and occasionally the family animals too!
