Join us tomorrow evening from 6pm for the launch of Zivarna Murphy's brand new exhibition, I am black because I come from the earth's inside.

This new commission is an invitation to enter an alternatively conceived shell grotto: a space for considering how this architectural form might be reclaimed and imagined otherwise.

Ornamental sites of display, wealth and status, shell grottoes became fashionable within British estates and gardens during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Often shaped by women whose labour went largely unrecorded, these spaces are entangled with notions of class, gender and Britishness. Murphy enters this layered history through making, re-forming the grotto with locally gathered boulder clay, hand-formed ceramics, and sculptural weaving.

Taking its form from the cave, the grotto carries deep associations with retreat, ritual, and transformation. Moving between the histories held in the grotto and her own experience, Murphy approaches making as a process of discovery, through which the grotto can be encountered anew.

Since March 2026, Zivarna Murphy has been supported as part of Holding Space, a studio residency at Juice Studios. The residency provided an artist working in Hull, who would otherwise not have access to a studio, with seven months of cost-covered studio space and dedicated time to develop and expand their creative practice. Zivarna’s residency culminates in this presentation of work.

Bod Squad is back for October half term with Alison Ollerhead / Arting UK!

Aimed at 12-16 year olds, Bod Squad sessions provide opportunities for young artists to explore new techniques and materials, connect with professional artists and reflect on their own work. Participants are encouraged to analyse and discuss ideas, developing a deeper understanding of art and how to talk about it. Over time, this progression builds skills, confidence and a sense of ownership. Whether you are thinking about studying art further or just want a space to be creative, Bod Squad is a place to grow.

Join artist Zivarna Murphy as she speaks about her practice and upcoming exhibition, I am black because I come from the earth's inside.

This even is both online and in person on Thursday 22 October, 6:30-8:30pm. Tickets are free and booking is required.

About Zivarna Murphy:

Dr Zivarna Murphy is an artist and researcher working intuitively across a range of materials and processes including clay, ceramic, sculptural weaving, printmaking and writing. She studied Anthropology and holds a PhD in Human Sciences.

She is interested in the human experience and combines emergent themes from her research around the social aspects of body and organ donation, namely loss, grief and transformation, with an auto-ethnographic approach exploring her own mixed-ethnicity identity and experiences of the world.

She explores these themes through material metaphors, sensorial experiences, and parallels within the landscape which surrounds her. For example, on visits to her local East Yorkshire coastline, she observes the erosion and loss of this landscape body as a metaphor for human loss. Through hand-formed tactile vessels from stoneware and porcelain, layered with eroded boulder clay and impressed shells, rocks and fossils, all gathered from this coastline, she approaches making as a process of discovery. The forms draw upon structures she sees in her local landscape such as fossilised shell bodies, ebbing cliffs and sea formed rocks.

She is interested in firing clay to ceramic as a transformative process and the becoming of the vessel body. Alternative worldbuilding is important within Zivarna’s practice, and the materials she uses imbue her work with a strong sense of place and connection.

As a port city, Hull has been shaped by water for centuries: through trade, migration and the movement of people, goods and ideas across the North Sea and beyond.

Bringing together artist moving image, documentary and narrative film, Liquid Love explores the different ways water connects us and carries traces of the past. Across the programme, rivers, oceans and coastlines become sites where histories of empire and migration resurface, while rising tides and submerged landscapes prompt reflection on the futures being shaped in our present.

UNTHINKABLE Film Festival is back at Humber Street Gallery again this year and we can't wait.

Upstairs in Space 2, UNTHINKABLE Film Festival will present an autumn exhibition of experimental filmmaking and video art, bringing together works by legendary director John Smith alongside short films from underground filmmakers, bedroom creatives, and visual expressionists. Rejecting conventional narrative structures, these works use editing and the moving image much the same way an artist uses a brush, creating images and experiences rarely seen elsewhere.
