Morayvia

Morayvia Moray's Science and Technology Experience Project Morayvia formed in May 2011 to take forward work started by the Nimrod Heritage Group.
(354)

We purchased the last Nimrod in Moray XV244 now named 'Duke of Edinburgh' following approval from Buckingham Palace. We have fielded a mobile aircraft exhibit capability since June 2012 including the largest mobile aircraft section - 40ft of Nimrod XV240. In June 2014 we took a lease on a former primary school site at Kinloss to turn it into a science and technology centre, whilst also progressing

a Community Asset Transfer application for the site with Moray Council. We have acquired other exhibits such as a Green Goddess and a Commer Fire Engine, A redundant Super Puma simulator cockpit donated by Bristow, as well as a Jet Provost and Vampire cockpit. We are pursuing procurement of a Sea King helicopter as this too is a key piece of Moray's aviation history. However, we are also progressing science and technology exhibits, and have secured funding from the Gordon and Ena Baxter Foundation for a mobile planetarium. Morayvia has been run by volunteers and we know we face a mountain trying to take this project forward but it has to be done, whatever the outcome. Your support can help to move the project forward and give it a greater chance of success.

It is with immense pride that we announce that our Chairman, Mark Mair, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours 2026 for services to heritage, to tourism and to the community in Moray.

This is a very well-deserved recognition for the years of hard work and passion that Mark has given to Morayvia. The growth of Morayvia has been remarkable since its inception, driven largely through Mark’s leadership and supported by our incredible and dedicated volunteers. Whilst Mark is hugely honoured to have received such recognition in his name, he considers this honour to belong to the volunteers, supporters, family, friends and colleagues who have helped make the journey possible. And the journey continues at pace.

We don’t think we have to bow or curtsy to him in his presence as a result of this honour, but we are delighted and proud that his dedication has been recognised in such a significant way!

BUSINESS AS USUAL - If you’re coming along to Morayvia this weekend, you might notice that one or two exhibits have been moved around outside, and that there are some items of construction equipment. So what are we up to we hear you ask?

As part of our growth and progression, we have taken the next step by commencing works which will see the er****on of a temporary(ish!) building within which we can house a number of our exhibits and this will not only help us to preserve and maintain those exhibits by protecting them from the elements (and falling trees which can do a fair bit of damage as we’ve experienced recently!), but also improve the visitor experience. This really will be a significant step and the support from visitors, members, volunteers, funders and local businesses has made this possible!

The new building is scheduled to be delivered next week to site and this will be a similar type building to the one that currently houses the Hawk T1 and Dragonfly helicopter, only on a considerably larger scale. Once the concrete in the foundation strip has sufficiently cured, the process of putting together the various parts of the structure will commence and hopefully over the next few weeks you will see quite a difference to the place!

In the meantime, we are very much open as normal, with the construction area being cordoned off to keep everyone safe. Come along and see for yourself how things are taking shape! These are exciting times!
