Kinross Museum

Kinross Museum From everyday life to extraordinary moments, Kinross Museum tells the story of Kinross-shire and its people. There are also books for sale.

Visit us to explore local history, culture, and heritage. We also have a Study Room, Thursdays 10am-7pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm. The Kinross (Marshall) Museum is housed in the library area of Loch Leven Community Campus. The museum takes its name from the noted local antiquarian David Marshall (1831 - 1902) who amassed a huge collection of books and artefacts which he left to the people of Kinross.

The collection was originally housed in the Kinross Carnegie Library but it was not until 1974 that a dedicated museum was created above the Carnegie Library. This facility was closed by Perth & Kinross Council in 1996. The Kinross (Marshall) Museum was created as a charitable trust a year later with the aim of opening a new museum for the benefit of local residents and visitors to Kinross. The present museum in the community campus opened in February 2010. Most of the museum displays are adjacent to the library and can be viewed whenever the library is open. As of 29 June 2021, the library opening hours are Tuesday 10am-7pm, Wednesday 10am-6pm, Thursday 10am-7pm, Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 10am-1pm. As of 1 July 2021, the Museum Study Room opening hours are Thursdays 10am-7pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm. The Museum Study Room contains further displays and archives which may assist historical research. The Study Room is staffed by volunteers. Please email or telephone first if you wish to undertake research. Kinross Museum is independent and owned by a Charitable Trust (Scottish Charity no. SC027144) and run by Friends and Volunteers. It is financed by donations, Friends of Kinross Museum subscriptions, fundraising events and grants.

WHAT AM I?
A curious object has recently been donated to the Museum, and we are hoping that some of our knowledgeable followers may be able to help us identify it.

The item appears to be a carved stone tool or implement, although unfortunately, we do not know exactly what it was used for, or what period it may date from.

Have you seen anything similar before? Could it have formed part of a larger object, tool, or piece of equipment? Any thoughts on the type of stone, age, or possible purpose would be greatly appreciated.

Please share your ideas in the comments below — sometimes local knowledge and keen eyes can help solve long-standing museum mysteries!

History of Rumbling Bridge
Did you know that the gorge at Rumbling Bridge was a must-see for eighteenth-century visitors? The arrival of the Devon Valley Railway at Rumbling Bridge in 1863 has been said to have transformed Rumbling Bridge from a not-so-quiet ‘backwater’ into a tourist hot spot.

The talk is at Moubray Hall, May 30th @ 7 pm.

Rumbling Bridge attracted many celebrity visitors, including Andrew Carnegie, Prince Napoleon, and Ramsay Macdonald, and its hotel was promoted as having the best grounds of any in Scotland. Today, though, it is virtually unknown – not even mentioned in the Lonely Planet or Rough Guides - and its walkways are in a poor state. This talk explores the fascinating story of the rise and decline of Rumbling Bridge as a tourist destination.

MERCAT CROSS

The historic Kinross Mercat Cross, once a central symbol of trade and community life in Kinross, at its current home in Sandport. This old 14th-century cross, complete with jougs, was originally located at the centre of the town opposite the old tolbooth, but was removed in 1824. It reappeared in a quarry near Thomanean and was restored in 1886 by Robert Burns Begg.

On the formation of Burns Begg Street, it was relocated to the front of the Town Hall, then later removed to Sandport.

The striking landmark served as a gathering point for markets and public announcements. Its relocation helps preserve an important piece of local heritage while giving it renewed visibility for residents and visitors alike.

A small move geographically—but a big step in keeping history alive.
