Tidespace is incredibly excited to announce the annual Rural Youth Phone Photography Competition is now running with a closing date of 5 February. This new competition is for young people aged 14 to 25, living in, or having previously lived in, Dumfries and Galloway and aims to open up conversations by providing a public platform for young people to express their identity and how they see ‘home’, its people and places, through the familiar accessible visual medium of phone photography.

There is £100 prize and you have to be in it...to win it.

The four judges for this year’s competition, award winning photographers who work globally and live in Dumfries & Galloway, are very much looking forward to seeing different and personal perspectives from each young person “Have fun, try things out, make images that show your own personal way of seeing 'home' by the way you tell your story."

Full details on the competition and how to enter are on www.tidespace.uk and on instagram.

“The in-person talk at Tidespace revealed the contrasts and parallels between these four individual exhibiting photographers. All live here in Dumfries and Galloway and have built extraordinary bodies of often radically exploratory global work. They have each chosen to work collaboratively in the last 5+ years. With very different approaches and methods, all four choose, whenever possible, to place their focus on their immediate environment, exploring and enhancing landscape, culture and community, and in doing so, all four are creating a real influence and legacy for this area of Scotland." COAST LIGHT
Sunday 3rd September 7:30 pm

Bella Bathurst, Author & Photojournalist, and Tidespace Writer-in-Residence will be in conversation about her book 'The Lighthouse Stevensons'. Described by The Times as ‘One of the best biographers of her generation’, Bella Bathurst’s definitive book, was the first of many. Her most recent, the brilliant ‘Field Works’ featured as part of Tidespaces LAND series.

Robert Louis Stevenson may have been the most famous of the Stevensons but he was by no means the most productive. The Lighthouse Stevensons, all four generations of them, were devoted to the seemingly impossible task of lighting the dark and dangerous seas around Scotland. Immediately after the incredible feat of completing his first lighthouse at Bell Rock, Robert Stevenson created the nearby lighthouse at the Mull of Galloway. Little Ross Lighthouse in Kirkcudbright Bay was built by his son Alan, which was lit 180 years ago this year.

After the Talk; included in the £8 ticket price, Author Book Signing, and a glass of wine

Very excited that BELLA BATHURST will be here to talk to TIDESPACE THIS FRIDAY NIGHT at 6pm about her latest book 'FIELD WORKS: What Land Does to People and What People Do to Land', there are a few tickets left so book quick! Book tickets via www.tidespace.uk

70 percent of land in the UK is farmland. In her book 'FIELD WORKS' BELLA BATHURST delves deeply and broadly into what is entailed to farm. Bearing witness to the choices and challenges of two generations of farmers living on the same farm as them in Wales, her broadranging interviews give rural voices to those who are rarely heard and therefore understood. These are the people whose daily lives, frequently for generations, are defined by and define the human food chain, and who in turn define the living landscape. Accumulatively Bella reveals the sheer complexities and impact of the landscape of modern farming: familial, social, political, economic, and environmental.
