We start the week on a wetter and colder note here in Kirkcudbright. That glorious sunshine from last week already feels like a distant memory.

Please note that much of this exhibition will be taken down on Thursday 18th June, in time for collection by our trusted courier. We will remain open until Saturday 20th, but with a different collection on the walls. So if you are planning on coming down to see this exhibition, please bear that in mind. Thank you.

What a bank holiday weekend that was!! It's not over yet, however, with a busy start to the day already. The glorious weather certainly helps to bring visitors to the town, it's Kirkcudbright at its best.

Lots of lovely things sold this weekend - one of the best sellers was jewellery by Anna Roebuck. We absolutely love this range of recycled plastic jewellery. Anna uses recycled plastic bottles to create this range, colouring it with her own specialist techniques. The bottles are given to Anna by members of the local community and all the recycling is done in house.

'I love the bold colours created and have been exploring this along with form, creating striking contemporary designs.
I love wearing my 'Nocean' jewellery, it's so light and easy to wear and always gets commented on when i wear it out.'

Unfortunately these aren't online, but if any of the pieces in the image are of interest, do get in touch to enquire.

Good morning.

Today is the final day of Spring Fling, and what a lovely weekend it has been. It's such a treat seeing the town sunny and busy with visitors. Thank you to everyone who has paid us a visit so far. If you're coming today, we're here till 4pm.

Visitors are loving work by Pascale Rentsch RSW, an award winning Swiss-born artist living in East Lothian, Scotland. Pascale paints plein-air, directly from nature and in all conditions, working instinctively and spontaneously. Her language is paint and she enjoys working outside with her materials, exploring mark-making, connecting with her surroundings, reacting to what she sees, feels and hears.

'June' is one of a collection which can be viewed here https://www.whitehousegallery.co.uk/product/japanese-roses-pascale-rentsch-rsw-2/

“I am always moved when painting in nature because wherever I look I feel hope – the skylarks singing high in the sky despite the stormy weather and the light sparkling like gold dust on the shoreline. I carry my art materials in my trusty trolley, weathered by big hills, rocks, sand and even snow. It keeps all my materials together in one place and saves my back from a heavy rucksack.

My setup may look rather messy when painting plein-air, such that I have been mistaken for a fly-tipper many times! However, I always lay the materials out in the same way so that when working fast and spontaneously they are quick to hand. For me, it is important not to follow a rigid plan but to enjoy the freedom of painting by not overthinking, just trusting in the feel of the moment. I never know what will happen or what image will finally appear on my piece of paper. It is a flow of feelings.

When painting in all weathers there are many practical challenges: the wind blowing my paintings across the Lammermuir Hills, low temperatures freezing my paints, and the frequent appearance of the rain in Scotland. But I am not overcoming these challenges to create the perfect image – all of these aspects are incorporated into my journey and channelled into the responsive marks and brushstrokes that I place. It all comes together as an expression of my experience and feelings in that moment.”

A little reminder that we are here today, Sunday 24th, and will be open till 4pm.

Kirkcudbright is the place to be today - whether you fancy visiting the many Spring Fling open studios venues, a stroll around the farmers market or just come and visit the businesses and cafes which are open today, there is plenty going on. And the sun is shining, again! :)

'Embrace' by Ruth Clayton https://www.whitehousegallery.co.uk/product/embrace-ruth-clayton/

'My paintings explore the energy and power of the sea, focusing on water as the dominant force rather than the structures that exist within it. While elements such as lighthouses may appear, they serve only as points of contrast, quiet, man-made forms set against the movement, weight, and presence of the ocean. The sea itself remains the true subject.

Working primarily in watercolour, I embrace the medium’s fluidity to mirror the natural motion of water. This is often enhanced with acrylic ink and soft pastel, allowing me to build intensity, texture, and depth where the sea becomes most turbulent. Through these layered materials, I aim to capture both the mesmerising beauty of the ocean and its capacity to be fierce, unpredictable, and unyielding.

My work reflects an ongoing fascination with the dual nature of the sea: calm and hypnotic one moment, overwhelming the next. Beneath this is a broader consideration of humanity’s relationship with nature. These paintings suggest a need for respect rather than control, an acknowledgment that nature’s power cannot be contained, only observed and understood.' - Ruth Clayton

Stuart Gray is a new addition to the gallery, and his small acrylic paintings have almost sold out. This Pied Wagtail is the only one remaining, and is looking for a new home. Tempted? We can send this to anywhere within the UK, and cover the postage costs.

Stuart Gray’s paintings celebrate British perching birds, placing them within carefully constructed still-life settings that draw on history, literature, and a sense of place. Painted in acrylic on canvas, each bird is rendered with close attention and restraint, then positioned on stacks of old books whose titles reference personal interests, local history, and location. These subtle narrative details invite the viewer to look slowly and consider connections between nature, culture, and memory.

Influenced by the quiet intensity of Carel Fabritius and the considered light and composition of Vermeer, Stuart’s works are intimate in scale and jewel-like in finish. Set against dark grounds and framed traditionally, the paintings echo a bygone time, encouraging contemplation rather than spectacle.

At the heart of the work is a deep affection for Britain’s often-overlooked birds. Rather than focusing on the exotic or the dramatic, Stuart seeks to elevate the understated, celebrating the quiet presence, resilience, and character of our familiar birds. -

Good morning.

We received a lovely email this morning from a customer in the Netherlands, who purchased a painting from us. We love getting this kind of feedback, and hope this reassures anyone who might be tempted to purchase from us from far and wide.

'Today we received our painting, and we are absolutely delighted with it. The painting is truly beautiful, even more stunning than it appeared on your website. Seeing it for the first time was genuinely emotional. It is wonderful to now have the sea in our home in such a meaningful way.

Thank you so much for the careful packaging and for the incredibly professional and smooth handling of everything. We really appreciate the excellent service and attention to detail.'

Please be reminded that our online shop is for UK only, so if you would like to obtain a shipping quote for anywhere else, please just get in touch on [email protected].
