A museum of a museum with old-world charm the Stewartry Museum was founded in 1879, and first occupied part of the Kirkcudbright Town Hall. As the collection grew, the present purposebuilt museum was planned and opened in 1893. The museum has an old-world charm and exhibits a wealth of objects relating to the area known as The Stewartry or Kirkcudbrightshire (the eastern half of Galloway). Researc

h Facilities The Stewartry Museum holds an impressive local history library and archive collection relating to the Stewartry and an extensive photographic archive. The Stewartry Museum opening hours vary throughout the year. Summer hours Monday-Saturday 10-4, Sunday 1-4.

Are you keen to find out more about the Viking Age artefacts in the museum? If so, there is a great museum blog available on the Kirkcudbright History Society website.

Over at Kirkcudbright Galleries we will be joined by Wordsmithcrafts tomorrow for a drop-in Viking-Age wire workshop from 11am Suitable for all ages and completely free to attend. Joined skilled craftsmen to create your own wire pendant to take home.

This small wooden s***f box once belonged to William Johnston, a local Kirkcudbright merchant who donated money in his will to create the Johnston school. The small, precise script tells the story of the s***f box, which was created as a souvenir of the Battle of Waterloo, created from the limb of a tree which once stood in the battlefield.
