Coco was commissioned after they had already passed. Their owner sent me a few references to choose from - this one was their favourite, and I understood why the moment I saw it. There is so much love in those eyes.

I loved every part of creating this piece - the fur texture, the shorter hairs, capturing the light. And then there was the rug. I think I spent more time on that rug than on Coco 😂

When the portrait was delivered, the message I got back made it all worth it.

This is why I do what I do.

A small reminder that I’ve recently added more original work to my website.

At the moment that includes Midnight Majesty and The Thoughtful Watcher - two very different pieces, but both ones I’ve enjoyed sharing this month.

I’m slowly building the originals side of Abigail Hemmings Art, and it feels good to have more work available again.

If you’d like more details, they’re available through my website or you’re welcome to message me.

Which of these two pieces are you most drawn to?

I’ve quietly added Midnight Majesty to my website.

This piece felt like one I wanted to share simply and let speak for itself. I was drawn to the contrast, the darker tones, and the sense of presence in it, and I wanted to keep the release of it just as calm and straightforward.

A closer look at The Thoughtful Watcher.

I always enjoy the quieter parts of a piece like this - the softer marks, subtle changes in tone, and the small details that gradually build form and expression.

Not every part of the process is dramatic, but those quieter stages are often the ones that give a piece its presence.

I’m hoping to share more of these close-up and process details alongside finished work.

Do you enjoy seeing the detail and process side of artwork?

Today is World Donkey Day, so I wanted to share The Thoughtful Watcher.

This piece was created from a photo I took of Posy, a donkey I used to look after along with another donkey called Pandora and some other animals when their owners went away.

Donkeys have so much quiet character, and that was something I really wanted to hold onto in this piece. I think there is often a thoughtfulness in their expression that people do not always notice straight away, and that is what inspired the title.

I’m slowly adding more of my original animal artwork to my website, and I’ll be sharing quieter updates as I go.

A closer look at Dappled Grace.

This piece has a quieter feel to it, and that is something I really like about it. I wanted to capture the softness of the horse’s coat and markings, while letting the graphite do the work through subtle contrast, texture, and detail.

I think pieces like this are a good reminder that not everything needs to be loud to have presence. Sometimes the quieter work says enough on its own.

Sharing one of my available pieces today - "Frozen in Time".

What drew me to this piece was that alert, watchful expression. I wanted to capture that moment of stillness - the kind of split second where an animal is fully aware of everything around it.

I may not always have something brand new to share, but I do have work that still matters to me and still deserves to be seen properly.

"Frozen in Time" is available, and you can find more details through the link in my profile.
