Not every piece starts with a grand plan.

Sometimes it is simply a reference photo that stops you in your tracks.

That is what happened with this young impala buck. There was something about the way he was looking straight at me. Calm but alert. It made me want to paint him.

The Gaze was created in pastels on paper and measures 29 × 39cm.

Most people see a horse. I’ve always seen a mystery I couldn’t leave alone.

When I was little, I thought they were real-life unicorns. Majestic, gentle and kind, but also a complete mystery that I desperately wanted to solve.

That feeling never really went away. I studied animal care and horse management, spent years riding, and every bit of it came from wanting to understand them better. To get closer to whatever it was I felt when I looked at them.

I still haven’t solved it. I don’t think I ever will.

And I think that is exactly why I keep drawing and painting them.

There’s something about a red deer stag that feels like it belongs in a fairy tale.

Regal and unhurried, like they know exactly what they are.

This piece started as part of a free live course by Bonny Snowdon, and I carried on working on it afterwards. It was a proper challenge from start to finish, especially all of the different colours and textures in the fur and antlers.

It was created in coloured pencils on Pastelmat and measures 16 × 15cm.

That spotted coat was never going to be easy in graphite. I had never drawn an Appaloosa before, and I wanted the challenge. The reference by Jack Creek Appaloosas had this calm, regal quality that I couldn’t ignore.

It took around six hours to complete and is still one of my favourite pieces I have ever drawn. Honestly, I’m surprised it hasn’t sold yet, especially as it was also one of my most popular greeting cards.

The framed original measures 13 × 13cm and is available for £195.

Some commissions stay with you.

Harry was a Border Collie, deeply loved, and gone by the time his portrait was commissioned. His owner had it made as a birthday gift for her husband, Harry and him had a really close bond.

They collected it in person. They both cried. They told me I'd captured his personality exactly as they remembered him.

That's the part of this work that matters most to me,

The hardest part of running a small art business from home isn't the art.

Some days the energy just isn't there - for the work, the admin, or anything else. I have good days and bad days, and on the bad ones the self-doubt tends to show up too.

On those days I remind myself why I started and why I want to keep going, even when things are slow and nothing's selling.

It's not always easy. But it's worth it.

Anyone else ever get so overwhelmed with something they just abandon it?

That's exactly what happened here. I fell for the reference the moment I saw it, a real sense of calm and friendship between these two foxes that I couldn't shake. I started it as a large graphite piece, but the scale of it overwhelmed me, and I'll be honest, I was frustrated with myself for not pushing through.

I couldn't let the reference go though. So I've started again, this time as a 30x40cm pastel.
It just felt right.

Here's where it's at now. The very first sketch.

What drew me in was the expression on their faces, so that's the part I'm most excited to build up as it develops.

Commissions are officially open again!

The studio's been out of action for a bit while new windows went in, but everything's sorted now and I'm ready to get back to painting.

I've already got one slot booked, which has made this feel even more exciting, and I've got 2 more spaces left for July.

If you've been thinking about getting a portrait done of your pet, this is your heads up!
Commission slots will be opening soon. I'm not asking you to do anything right now. No rushing, no pressure. But if it's been sitting in the back of your mind, now is a good time to have a proper think about what you'd want and whether it feels right for you.
And if the timing still isn't right, that's completely okay. I'll still be here when you are.
