Just a quick reminder that my exhibition at Mulberry Bush Wholefoods in Lampeter finishes this Friday 16th October.

If you’ve been meaning to go and have a look, there are only a few days left! The artwork is displayed around the upstairs café.

Mulberry Bush is at 2 Bridge Street, Lampeter, SA48 7HG. It is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5.30pm.

This is "Welsh Matron", one of the pieces in my exhibition, but there is more behind it than you would know from looking at it.

The ewe was known as Ripped Ear because of her torn ears. She and another ewe, Green Tag, were the two sheep that started the flock. I used to care for them, whenever their owners were away.
I took the photograph for this piece while Ripped Ear was watching one of her lambs from a distance. She lived to old age, as did her lamb. Sadly, her grand-lambs and the rest of the flock later died when an illness spread through them too quickly for them to be saved.

It makes "Welsh Matron" more than a portrait for me. It is a record of a flock I knew and cared for.

I realised I never shared Bailey’s finished portrait.

I was asked to create this pastel portrait as a birthday present for my client’s son. Bailey had passed away, and he adored her, so I wanted to get her markings and expression right.
This video shows me adding some of the last details, then mounting and framing her portrait ready to go home.
My client said I had caught Bailey’s markings and emotion perfectly. That meant a lot to me. The portrait now hangs in their living room as a tribute to Bailey.

I thought I'd share a few photos of my exhibition now that everything is up at Mulberry Bush Wholefoods in Lampeter.

There are horses, donkeys, sheep, cattle and wildlife displayed around the upstairs café. Most of the pieces were created from photos I took myself, so a few of them have personal stories behind them. I'll share some of those stories while the exhibition is on.
All of the artwork is available to buy, but you can also just pop upstairs and have a look if you're nearby. The exhibition is there until Friday 16th October.

Mulberry Bush Wholefoods is at 2 Bridge Street, Lampeter SA48 7HG. It is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5:30pm and closed on Sundays.

Not every piece starts with a grand plan.

Sometimes it is simply a reference photo that stops you in your tracks.

That is what happened with this young impala buck. There was something about the way he was looking straight at me. Calm but alert. It made me want to paint him.

The Gaze was created in pastels on paper and measures 29 × 39cm.

Most people see a horse. I’ve always seen a mystery I couldn’t leave alone.

When I was little, I thought they were real-life unicorns. Majestic, gentle and kind, but also a complete mystery that I desperately wanted to solve.

That feeling never really went away. I studied animal care and horse management, spent years riding, and every bit of it came from wanting to understand them better. To get closer to whatever it was I felt when I looked at them.

I still haven’t solved it. I don’t think I ever will.

And I think that is exactly why I keep drawing and painting them.

There’s something about a red deer stag that feels like it belongs in a fairy tale.

Regal and unhurried, like they know exactly what they are.

This piece started as part of a free live course by Bonny Snowdon, and I carried on working on it afterwards. It was a proper challenge from start to finish, especially all of the different colours and textures in the fur and antlers.

It was created in coloured pencils on Pastelmat and measures 16 × 15cm.

Commissions are officially open again!

The studio's been out of action for a bit while new windows went in, but everything's sorted now and I'm ready to get back to painting.

I've already got one slot booked, which has made this feel even more exciting, and I've got 2 more spaces left for July.
