‘BRING ME CLOSER’
Concrete, steel, hessian

This work contrasts brutalist concrete with natural hessian. The faces can be moved by the viewer, bringing the materials and forms together through interaction.

If you’ve just joined us, this post is part of a series walking through ‘An Isolated State’

Building my first exhibition: what I learnt
1. Be prepared
Have your tools + materials ready before you start. Nothing kills momentum faster than having an idea and not being able to execute it.
2. Plan everything (loosely)
Map out your pieces, stages, and timelines — but don’t over-control it. Structure gives you direction, not restriction.
3. Know your limits
Work with your own pace, not against it. Trust your work ethic, but don’t overload yourself with unrealistic timelines.
4. Making = thinking
My ideas develop through doing. Don’t wait for clarity before starting — it often comes during the process.
5. Leave room for change
Go in with intention, but don’t lock yourself into a fixed outcome. The best ideas usually come mid-process.
6. Give yourself extra time
Things will go wrong, take longer, or evolve. Always build in a buffer.
7. Enjoy it
If you’re not enjoying the process, something’s off. Take breaks, reset, even have a little dance — it matters more than you think.
8. Think about the viewer
Spend time in the space. How will people move through it? How do the pieces connect? The experience matters as much as the work.

If this helped and you want more from my process, comment “more” + follow :)

‘STAY AFLOAT’
Unfixed cyanotype on cotton, handmade steel bracket, fixings.

Stay Afloat is an unfixed cyanotype, captured and digitised, holding a moment in time that no longer exists. Inherently fleeting yet suspended in time, the work is printed onto cotton and suspended within the space, the fabric gently sways, responding to movement.

‘COME CLOSER’
Bespoke framed photographic diptych, vinyl lettering
Part of An Isolated State (2020–21)

Come Closer presents two photographic images of sculptural facades, referencing brutalist forms in steel and concrete and reflecting the societal “platforms” on which we situate ourselves. The diptych functions conjunctively: in the first image, the faces are close, evoking intimacy, care, and compassion; in the second, they are separated, confronting one another, suggesting tension, mistrust, and the fragility of human connection.

Created in response to the conditions of isolation, the work reflects on the ways closeness — both between people and within the self — can be disrupted, highlighting the psychological and physical separation experienced during the Covid era.

the first few steps as you enter into ‘An Isolated State’

Despite being made 4/5 years ago the work marks the early foundations of my practise. Emerging from isolation and uncertainty the work still informs my thinking on identity, vulnerability and growth today.

An Isolated State (2020–21) was my debut solo exhibition. Using multidisciplinary, immersive, and interactive installation, it examined the fragmentation and reconstruction of the self during prolonged isolation.

the entrance to ‘An Isolated State’ Debut Solo Exhibtion by Jacob Talbot

Over the coming weeks, I will be sharing An Isolated State (2020–21), my debut solo exhibition, presented here as a walkthrough of the space and works as they were originally experienced.

This work was made 4–5 years ago, during and immediately after lockdown, and I’ve taken time before sharing it publicly. An Isolated State marked the early foundations of my practice, emerging from a period of isolation, reflection and uncertainty.

“Our Face In This World” sits atop the entrance into the exhibition. A booklet greets you, inviting you to touch, examine and play with the work. you are invited to draw & write your thoughts as you encounter the experience.

“Over the next few weeks I’m going to be sharing with you my debut solo exhibtion ‘An Isolated State’.
This exhibition commenced in 2021 and was an accumulation of about two years worth of work made during the lockdown and Covid era.

Because of the times we were in, we didn’t get the opportunity for a graduation show, so I decided to put my own exhibtion on.

Despite the work being made four or five years ago, it marks the early foundations of my practise.

I’ll be posting in chronological order as if you were experiencing the exhibition for yourself. Each post will examine a part of the exhibition and in the caption I’ll write a little bit about how the work was experienced and my thinking behind it.

As was encouraged within the exhibition please share with me your thoughts as I learnt there were many different interpretations to the work.

Thank you to for hosting the exhibition, thank you to for funding the exhibition; and thank you to you - for wanting to know more about my practice.

If you got this far let me know what you think of this video!! x
