Our Story
Thwaite Watermill is one of the last remaining examples of a working watermill in the country. It’s nestled on a scenic island in the Aire and Calder waterway, a short distance from Leeds City Centre.
Inside the mill space, see how the working waterwheel has been powering the mill for over 200 years and discover how solid rock was turned into into paint and putty. The Georgian Grade II Thwaite House also reveals what life was like for the workers and mill owners living on Thwaite island.
The site is rich in wildlife and natural habitats, offering guests the chance to wander through magical woodland trails and get close to nature by the canal. There are free nature packs available from reception for younger visitors so everyone is kept entertained during your visit.
Thwaite Watermill is a popular destination for families and groups and also one of the leading wedding destinations in Yorkshire. If you’re planning a visit then check out the website for our up-to-date opening times. We’re open at weekends and during the week in the school holidays too!
